'A Journey' Ending Explained: Shane and Bryan's love story ends tragically

MANILA, PHILIPPINES: Netflix dropped a Filipino film titled 'A Journey' on April 12, 2024. The film revolves around the emotional journey of a couple as they confront the challenges of battling cancer.
When Shane (Kaye Abad) learns about the return of her tumor, she decides to ditch the chemo and instead fulfill her dreams. She, along with her husband and best friend, sets off on an adventure to tick off her entire bucket list.
However, as she finally completes the tasks on her list and her husband persuades her to get the treatment, the story takes a shocking twist.
What happens to Bryan in Netflix's 'A Journey'?
After Bryan (Paolo Contis) and Shane return from Tasmania, they spend an intimate night together. However, the next day, when Bryan wakes up, he suffers a bizarre pain and faints.
Shane rushes him to the hospital where he is announced dead. It is revealed that Bryan died due to aneurysm, a condition where a vein burst in his head, and it went undiagnosed.
Shane, who was preparing for her own funeral, finds it difficult to deal with the grief of her husband's sudden death.
Does Shane survive cancer in 'A Journey'?
In the final moments, we see Shane undergoing chemotherapy, as her last promise to Bryan. However, the chemo starts to suck life out of her as the radiations make her too weak.
As her friend Kristoff (Patrick Garcia) sits beside her in her final moments, she says that she isn't able to fight back cancer because she is unable to cope with the loss of her husband.
Shane tragically loses her battle to the deadly disease and Kristoff finds himself lonely, with both of his best friends dead within a span of few weeks.
Though Bryan and Shane's love story couldn't continue on Earth, viewers are left with the hope that they reunited in the afterlife.
