A tweet from the Sheriff's Office read, "Happening Now: @HCSOTexas responded to a fatal shooting at 11200 blk of Veterans Memorial Drive. Upon arrival, units discovered a male had been shot and was pronounced deceased at the scene. No suspect info at this time. #HouNews."
Sgt. Dennis Wollford, of the Harris County Sheriff's Office homicide division, said that when deputies checked the car next to which Terrell's body was found, they realized that a small child was inside the vehicle.
The toddler was determined to be around two years of age and was sleeping in the backseat. She was not injured in the shooting.
A neighbor who did not wish to be identified told Click2Houston that the child had seen what happened to her father and was "crying out for her daddy."
She said she tried her best to comfort the two-year-old after the traumatic incident. "I fixed her some hot chocolate, and I gave her a bag of chips to eat, and I gave her a blanket to put on to cover her up because it's cold," she said, adding, "No one should have to go through that. No one."
Osiel Serrano, another resident in the area, expressed alarm at the shooting and said, "I just think it's terrible, especially because there was such a little baby there."
The police said the child was later taken to a Child Protective Services office and reunited with her mother. Detectives have launched an investigation to hunt down the gunman who shot and killed Terrell. They currently do not have a motive or even a description of the shooter or the vehicle the person fled in.
