Calvin Wijeweera: Devastated sister of teen killed in crash, asks why '90-yr-old was allowed to drive?'
CARLINGFORD, AUSTRALIA: A week after the death of Calvin Wijeweera, an Australian high schooler, in a horrific vehicle crash with a 90-year-old woman at the wheel, his sister has spoken out and made some heart-wrenching admissions. Not only has she spoken about what a ‘nightmare’ this whole situation is and how it has wrecked her family, but she has also gone on to question why an elderly woman was allowed to drive.
17-year-old Wijeweera was killed last week when he was struck by a car that mounted a gutter while he was out with friends, on the way to Carlingford Court Shopping Center. His older sister Ovindi, who was overseas when she was told of the news, has been in shock and grief ever since.

According to Daily Mail, Ovindi had called Westmead Hospital for an update on her brother’s condition when she heard, but they had told her that there was no patient of her brother’s name there. While she was confused, she called up her dad, who finally confirmed the news. “No one wants me to tell you this but he has passed away.”
Recalling her thoughts on the day of the news coming to her, she said, “On the flight coming back to Sydney I kept thinking I'm going realize that I'm just dreaming (and) this isn't actually happening.” She has also talked about how she and her brother were “really close” and that she doesn’t “have any other siblings except for him.” She then goes on to add, “I'll miss him so much because I won't be able to share anything with him anymore.”
While the elderly woman has not been charged, questions have arisen as to why a woman of her age was allowed to drive. Ovindi said, “It’s not feelings of hatred,” and then added, “It’s just, how can a 90-year-old woman be allowed to drive?”
Wijeweera and his family moved to Australia in 2008 when both siblings were only children. “It was the four of us here… Whenever I'd turn a corner I'd see him sitting at the dining table because he would study on the table," she said. "I would see him in the kitchen grabbing something to eat." He was with two other friends when the accident happened, both of whom survived- but are still in a grave state of shock from losing a friend.
Regarding the terrible accident, Superintendent Robert Toynton said that “It’s a tragic incident” and then assured that there will be steps to figure out what went wrong. “Obviously, the crash investigation unit will put together and piece together what happened.”
