LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The fifth episode of 'Sugar' on Apple TV+ dropped on April 26, 2024, and it ends with viewers left with more questions about the protagonist John Sugar's identity.
'Sugar' is about a mysterious detective John Sugar (Colin Farrell) who is tasked with finding Olivia Siegel (Sydney Chandler), the granddaughter of film producer Jonathan Siegel (James Cromwell).
Episode 5 of the series delves deeper into Sugar's identity as we see him make an uncharacteristic move. It further deepens the mystery of Olivia's disappearance. Here we explain the end of Episode 5 of 'Sugar'.
David commits suicide at the end of 'Sugar' Episode 5
The episode opens with David Siegel's (Nate Corddry) performance in a film that his father is making for him. We see that he is not good at what he does and while he re-watches the tape of his performance, he is overwhelmed with emotion about his past actions and how it has ruined everything for him.
His parents are desperate to keep him away from John Sugar but he ultimately takes the step and confesses about mentioning Olivia to Stallings (Eric Lange) after she supported a woman who would not take monetary compensation and drop the sexual misconduct case against David.
Throughout the episode, David is panicky and emotional which most likely points to the overwhelming guilt he has for his actions. In the final moments of the episode, he shoots himself in the bathroom.
This could lead to problems for Sugar as David's father Bernie Siegel (Dennis Boutsikaris) has already threatened him with legal action.
John Sugar gets uncharacteristically violent trying to protect Melanie
An underlying romantic track has been brewing continuously between John and Melanie (Amy Ryan). In this episode, we see Melanie in danger as one of Stalling's men breaks into her house looking for information related to Clifford Carter.
John who is coincidentally in the area protects Melanie and instinctively attacks the intruder, injuring him badly. This is uncharacteristic of Sugar who earlier stated that he was averse to violence.
This also points towards his affection for Melanie as he went to great lengths to protect her. Sugar promises to be better next time.
In the closing moments of the episode, Sugar tells Melanie that he has a secret that he cannot tell Melanie. Now whether he is telling Melanie this or if it is a hallucination, we will find out in the next episode.
Ruby meets Miller to discuss Olivia's case
Ruby (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) has been communicating with a man named Miller (Paul Schulze) who we finally see in this episode as Ruby discusses Sugar's actions with him. Miller comes across as Ruby's superior.
Both Miller and Ruby are trying to protect Stallings from Sugar. Our speculative reason for this is perhaps Stallings has something to do with Sugar's sister. Stallings is seen in Mexico in this episode where he is running a human trafficking business.
While writing his notes, Sugar says he will see Stallings next and try to be better, which alludes to him not getting violent like he did with Melanie's intruder.
