Zac Effron was rushed to the hospital after he contracted a deadly infection while shooting for a new TV show in Papua New Guinea, according to a report by Daily Mail.

In his new show, titled 'Killing Zac Efron', the 'High School Musical' star contracted a "form of typhoid or similar bacterial infection" just before Christmas.

He was flown to Brisbane, Australia, from Papua New Guinea by flight along with medical professionals.

After arriving in Australia, Efron was admitted to the private St Andrews War Memorial Hospital where his condition was described as "stable". The actor remained under medical treatment and got approval to head back home just before Christmas.

According to Hollywood Reporter, the series follows Efron heading "deep into the jungle of a remote, dangerous island, falling off the grid for 21 days." Efron will be accompanied with basic gear, a guide, and a camera crew as he goes on each adventure.

"I tend to thrive under extreme circumstances and seek out opportunities that challenge me on every level," Efron said on Wednesday, December 25, in a statement. "I am excited to explore any uncharted territory and discover what unexpected adventure awaits."

Lydia Tenaglia will be producing the show. "We are excited to partner with Quibi on this new mobile experience to bring the audience on a wild, one-of-a-kind immersive journey into Zac’s world as he travels through remote locations in search of adventure," she said.

While the star is in a good condition now, fans are pointing out the irony of Efron acquiring a deadly infection in the series which is titled 'Killing Zac Efron'.

"Ironic that Zac Efron was filming 'Killing Zac Efron' when he was rushed to hospital in a life or death emergency but also etc cannot imagine my life without him in it my one true love," read one comment.

Another joked, "This guy almost died and I just found out. Take care of yourself dude... @ZacEfron and seriously the show is called Killing Zac Efron? Ya almost succeeded."

In recent updates, Efron has addressed the widespread concern that flooded his way as soon as news of his hospitalization hit the internet, according to ET.

Taking to Instagram, the latest face of Ted Bundy shared: "Very thankful to everyone who has reached out. I did get sick in Papua New Guinea but I bounced back quick and finished an amazing 3 weeks in P.N.G."

"I'm home for the holidays with my friends and family. Thanks for all the love and concern, see you in 2020!" he added.
