Spoilers for 'You' Season 4 Episode 8

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Viewers who have been watching ‘YOU’ from the beginning have already an idea of how insane the show really is. Even when Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) has committed so many murders, we continue to root for him and want him to receive all the love that he has been longing for. There have been a lot of twists and turns in Joe’s journey, but things that take place in Episode 8 of ‘You’ Season 4 make our protagonist’s life a living hell. In the concluding moments of the previous episode, we saw Joe killing Rhys Montrose and saving Marienne (Tati Gabrielle). However, it turns out that Rhys is still alive and Marienne is actually locked inside a glass cage.

It turns out that it was Joe who kidnapped Marienne and put her in the cage. This happened as soon as they met each other in London. In one of the earlier episodes, we saw Joe mixing something in Marienne’s coffee and making her unconscious so that she can go back to her daughter in Paris by getting on the train. However, in reality, he took her in and got her inside a glass cage. Joe wanted to have Marienne in his life so that they can give their relationship a second chance. A few moments later we see Joe offering her food while watching videos of Rhys Montrose (Ed Speleers) and he tells her that Rhys inspires him. When Marienne seemed too cocky, Joe decided to put her back in the cage and would order food three times a day and some biscuits as well. No one knew where Marienne was until the day Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman) found her.

Did Joe really kill Malcolm, Simon, and Gemma?

Meanwhile, in the present timeline, Joe believes that he is going crazy because he doesn’t know anything about Marienne’s kidnapping. After burying the body of the real Rhys Montrose, he returns home and sits with a version of Rhys that only resides in Joe’s head. Joe is going crazy and remembers that he hid a camera somewhere in the living room that he installed for a confession from Rhys. By looking at the footage, he can prove that Rhys is alive and he’s not going crazy. But it turns out that no one visited him that night and everything that happened at his home was actually done by Joe himself. Rhys, the one that lives in his head, tells him that Joe and the real Rhys never ever met. Joe sits on the sofa and remembers how they met and talked to each other. In every scenario, Joe never had a conversation with Rhys where someone was around. He and Rhys only talked to each other when they were alone. In reality, Rhys Montrose was never present there and Joe could only see him because he was obsessed with him. He created an image of Rhys in his head and when things got out of control he started seeing him, talking to him, and treating him like a real person.

After talking to a made-up version of Rhys, Joe also gets to know that he is actually the real ‘EAT THE RICH’ killer and murdered Malcolm, Simon, and Gemma. That’s why the made-up version of Rhys served Roald in a platter to Joe because he got to know everything. Joe tries finding a map or a key to the cage so that he can save Marienne. In that moment, Rhys makes him realize that he was a fan of the real Rhys Montrose and has already read his book several times. So, that was the moment when he also realized that he was living his life as a person who had two different lives. One as Jonathan and the other as Joe.

While looking for a clue, he also finds a box that has different things related to the real Rhys. There was a map in which Joe had marked different places that Rhys visits frequently. He follows the map and reaches a restaurant named Tandoori Tradition. As soon as he walks past the restaurant, Joe starts to realize what he did to Marienne. He and the made-up version of Rhys walk on the street and reach a place that looks like an underground warehouse or something. He takes the key and manages to open the door.

Things are getting interesting and weird at the same time because Joe has finally got to know that he is a “cold-blooded psycho” who needs help. On the other hand, Nadia is still in the basement talking to Marienne while Joe has reached there as well.
