'Yellowstone' Season 5: Kelly Reilly recalls how America went 'after her' due to one crushing scene
Paramount’s ‘Yellowstone’ has been one of the most popular shows in recent times and it gets better with each passing season. The western drama, which revolves around the Dutton family, has created a separate fan base and continues to remain a force to be reckoned with even after four seasons. One of the reasons why viewers love the show is a character named Beth Dutton. Played by the supremely talented Kelly Reilly, the character is known as the true backbone of John Dutton (Kevin Costner), the family’s patriarch.
Over the years, Beth has done a lot of questionable things. From blackmailing his brother to kill his own biological father to committing corporate fraud, Beth has a long list of “wrongdoings” in her life. But fans never took her as a bad person because everything she did was to save her family and they believe that she is the only one who should be taking care of Dutton's business once John decides to retire. However, there’s one moment that managed to annoy fans and forced them to go after the character.

In the Season 4 finale, young Carter called Beth “mama” and she told him to not call him that because she’s not his mama. As soon as the scene surfaced online, social media went berserk and said how can she do that to a little kid? Well, if you don’t believe us, then hear it from Kelly herself.
In a recent interview with TV Line, the actress discussed the finale of ‘Yellowstone’ Season 4 and talked about how entire America went after her when she refused to let Carter call her “mama”. Reilly noted that she kept on telling fans that it was “her character” who didn’t want him to call her mama. She added, “America went after me for that! I was like, ‘That’s the character, not me!’ But I get it. I wish she would [let herself be a mother to him], too.”
However, she also made it clear that letting him call Beth his “mama” won’t be truthful to the kid because he just lost his mother a few days or weeks ago. She opined, “But, think about it. If she’s telling this kid that she’s just met, ‘Yeah, I’ll be your mom,’ that’s not truthful to him.”
For the uninitiated, in the finale of ‘Yellowstone’ Season 4, Carter and Beth meet in the barn, and he says, “Morning, mama”. Beth immediately responds, “Hey baby”. A few moments later, she tells Carter to “not” call her mama because “it’s not true”. The innocent kid tells her that he decided to call her mama because she has been “acting like one”.
Beth gets angry and says, “You lost your mother, kid. You don't get another. I lost mine. The same goes for me. And I'm nobody's mother. Ever. Got it?” Her wordings leave the young boy in tears and fans were really irritated with how Beth behaved with the young boy.
This is not the first time Kelly has come out and discussed the matter. After the finale’s telecast, the ‘Sherlock’ actress went on to respond to one of her fans on Instagram and told why her character behaved like that with young Carter. She wrote, “Beth was about to do something that will ruin her life. She is about to go into a prison and kill the man that she thinks attacked her family. She knows there is a chance she will not come back. She can’t tell this kid she is his mother and then leaves him abandoned again.”
At the time, Reilly also stated that in her heart she wanted him to call her “mama”, but she was out of vengeance at that time and couldn’t see anything else. She added, “But honestly, not sure Beth at that moment was ready to be that for anyone .. she was out for vengeance and could see nothing else. (There is a moment, where I hope you see the fight in her after he calls her that) I think the heart wants it but she has to protect that kid from herself…not sure that will make sense. But let’s see where the writer will take them…I have hope x.”
It’ll be interesting to see how complicated or easy their relationship is in Season 5, but we would definitely want Carter to call Beth mama and Beth accepts that with a smile on her face.
