'Yellowstone' Season 3: Beth and Jamie hate each other with passion, but what is the cause for this animosity?

The brother-sister duo can hardly really look eye-to-eye on matters related to the ranch, other Dutton properties, the family, or pretty much anything in the world

Paramount's hit western drama 'Yellowstone' is returning for a third season with new allies and new enemies. Spearheaded by Kevin Costner, who plays John Dutton, the show follows a billionaire family in a race to protect their land from the constant threats from land developers, politicians, builders and the local Native American community.

Created by Taylor Sheridan, the series, obviously, is not without family drama.

To say that Beth and Jamie Dutton (Kelly Reilly and Wes Bentley) have a love-hate relationship is not even cutting it. The brother-sister duo can hardly really look eye-to-eye on matters related to the ranch, other Dutton properties, the family, or pretty much anything in the world. This is nothing like Beth's relationship with her other brother Kayce (Luke Grimes), which is frankly a lot more functional than Beth and Jamie's.

One of the important questions that 'Yellowstone' has left its audience guessing is this: What exactly is the reason behind Beth's animosity towards Jamie? So much so that there is more than just a barrage of insults coming his way - she has even asked him to kill himself and threatened to destroy all or any happiness that might come his way.

Over the course of the last season, their relationship continued to become increasingly acidic. Beth doesn't trust Jamie one bit - especially after his actions in the previous season, but she doesn't think Jamie even deserves to be trusted. In Season 1 episode 3 'No Good Horses', it was revealed that their mother Evelyn (Gretchen Mol) died after being crushed under a horse. Since then, Jamie has blamed her for losing his mother at a young age. This he expresses in Season 2 when a tense argument turns physical. Jamie doesn't need to blame her because Beth already blames herself for her mother's tragic death.

Beth had left Rip and the ranch for a reason - this hasn't been revealed so far, but we think Season 3 is when the makers will finally let the audience in on the secret. Last year, the show's Twitter account teased that there is more to their relationship than what is shown so far. "A lot of you are asking about their history. We can't say!! (Fear of the Duttons and all). But there IS more to the story. Bear with us on this one."

So fans, who did their own share of digging to predict that Jamie might have been the reason behind Beth fleeing the ranch. I believe Beth hates Jamie so much because he did something to her and Rip's relationship when they were younger. She got way too emotional looking at Rip and Tate! I think she got pregnant young and something happened to the baby," said one fan. "Watching Beth watch Rip & Tate I'm having the feeling at one time Beth Dutton was pregnant with Rip's baby. She hadn't told him yet and Jamie caused her to lose the baby and her ability to have any more," said another fan.

In the previous season, Beth had an outburst after she sees Rip (Cole Hauser) and Tate (Brecken Merrill) share a sweet moment on the ranch. Fans at the time theorized that at some point in time, Beth and Rip might have been expecting a baby of their own until Jamie got in the way and changed the course of that story.

Just how much truth there is to this theory, will be revealed over the course of Season 3. Till then, we hope Jamie doesn't bring more bad luck to the Duttons. Lord only knows just how capable he is of that.

'Yellowstone' returns with Season 3 on Sunday, June 21, 2020, on Paramount Network.
