‘Yellowstone' Season 3 Episode 5: Will Rip ever find out how Jamie destroyed Beth's future in their childhood?
Spoilers for 'Yellowstone' Season 3 Episode 5 'Cowboys and Dreamers'
And it is finally revealed. A secret that Paramount Network's hit show 'Yellowstone' had kept hidden for three seasons is now out. A pressing question that fans wouldn't stop wondering about (and theorizing over) is now answered. If you haven't watched the latest episode, do not read forward for Taylor Sheridan reveals the secret in a gut-wrenching manner.
This week's cold open is a young Beth (Kylie Rogers) discovering that she is pregnant. She cannot stop crying but bucks up and approaches young Jamie (Dalton Baker) for help. Sidebar: it looks like their relationship is just alright at this point. While Beth doesn't tell her older brother who the father of the child is despite him asking her, it is no doubt that it is Rip. Maybe that's why she didn't tell him — it wasn't long since Rip had come to the ranch, under the tutelage of John Dutton. And if the Dutton patriarch were to find out the truth, well, doom be welcome.
Jamie takes her to a free Indian clinic on the Broken Rock Reservation. There, he is given a fair warning: "A requirement of patients receiving an abortion in this clinic is sterilization," the lady behind the counter tells him. Despite this, Jamie takes Beth to go forward with the procedure, thus embarking on a lifelong spiteful relationship with his younger sister.
When Beth gets home after the abortion, she meets a young Rip (Kyle Red Silverstein) but doesn't tell him anything about the abortion. He knew about the pregnancy so it doesn't take a rocket scientist to join the dots. But even now, Beth won't tell him the entire truth. As they sit on the porch as adults in the dead of the night, silently mourning what could be, it's evident that Beth really wants to be a mother.
While we knew that the secret would be revealed this season, several fans had actually wondered if the wait was going to be worth it. For one, many had (rightly) theorized that their shaky relationship is a result of a failed pregnancy in Beth's past. It is debatable whether the wait has been worth the reveal, but there is no doubt that we're on Beth's side. In order to preserve the Dutton name, and making things easier for himself, Jamie snatches her agency — making a decision for his sister without even consulting her.
It's not revealed if Beth knew what she was getting into as a teenager. However, she might have discovered the damage years later as an adult when she tried conceiving on purpose. Is that why and how she split from her husband?
'Yellowstone' airs on Sundays at 9 pm ET/ PT on Paramount Network.
