'Yellowstone' season 2 finale: Will John Dutton's financial woes force him to sell part of the ranch?

Tate's disappearance is not the only reason why we think John Dutton should consider selling his ranch
UPDATED AUG 27, 2019

Spoilers ahead for the final episode of 'Yellowstone'

We have thought about it. And we know you have thought of it too. Would John Dutton (Kevin Costner) be better off by selling the ranch, or a part of it, to Dan Jenkins (Danny Huston)? John has tried everything in his might to keep the ranch to his family and maintain its legacy, but season 2 of ' Yellowstone' has proven to be quite a disaster for his family.  In the penultimate episode, we saw his grandson Tate (Brecken Merrill) being taken hostage as he is kidnapped from the ranch. While it hasn't been revealed yet, we are certain that it is the Beck brothers who have kidnapped him.  This is the closest that Kevin Costner's John has come to losing a Dutton.

Just before Tate's disappearance, Monica (Kelsey Asbille) and Kayce (Luke Grimes) were discussing about how safe it is for them to continue living on the ranch - it has been a bone of contention for Monica especially since she has never been sure about the activities that happen on the ranch (or in the name of the ranch and the family) after dark. John had then asked her for a second chance to prove it to her that they can take care of her and Tate. But could it be that Tate's kidnapping has only further cemented her fears? Could it be that even John can now see how dangerous living on the ranch really is? But Tate's disappearance is not the only reason why we think John should consider selling his ranch to Dan.

In 'Enemies by Monday', Dan pays a visit to John on the ranch. From the looks of it, it feels like a friendly visit - in fact, it looks like Dan also wants to be friends with John, keep their differences aside, but John reiterates that they are enemies and that is all that they will remain and that is all that they're meant to be. They also have a discussion about Dan wishing to sell, but John being against it. This season, it was also revealed that the ranch hasn't made a profit in years, which makes Beth's (Kelly Reilly) acquisition of land dangerous. This is also why John should sell.

In addition to this is the new casting for season 3. Karen Pittman is set to star in season 3 of the series. According to reports, she is set to play Willa Kays, the CEO of Metro Capital. She is a savvy businesswoman who seems to get what she wants anyhow. Apparently, she heads to the ranch with an offer for John. Reportedly, she makes him an offer that he cannot refuse.  Could it be an offer to buy off the property? Pittman's Willa is described as "very smart, confident," and "intimidating" with the "posture of a field general".

Considering everything, John is in a very tight spot financially. He even admits his critical financial situation to Dan. So though it might be difficult for him to part ways with the ranch, he could accept the deal that Pittman brings his way.
