Woke Yale students ripped for disrupting free speech panel featuring conservative guest
A large crowd of woke students was filmed at Yale Law School threatening two guests speakers as well as staff at a free speech event after a conservative guest defended the Supreme Court's decision favoring a Colorado baker who refused to make an LGBT-themed cake for a gay wedding ceremony.
Law enforcement was summoned to the scene as officers escorted the guest speakers from Yale Law School's free speech debate after more than a hundred students threatened the conservative panelist with physical harm and caused a riot in the auditorium by blocking the exits. The incident took place last week at a debate featuring progressive firebrand Monica Miller from the American Humanist Association and Kristen Waggoner, a conservative Christian from the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) nonprofit.

As reported by the Washington Free Beacon, the purpose of the panel was to show how a liberal atheist and a conservative Christian could find common ground on free speech issues. Both Miller and Waggoner were on the same side while discussing a 2021 case involving legal remedies for First Amendment violations that were presented to the Supreme Court. However, woke protesters were outraged by the ADF's successful Supreme Court defense of Colorado baker Jack Phillips, who refused to bake a gay wedding cake. According to the Free Beacon, the group was also infuriated by the ADF's support for a measure that called for anyone wanting a change of gender to undergo gender reassignment surgery.

While Waggoner and ADF supporters were inundated with threats at the meeting itself, liberal speaker Miller was harassed ahead of the event by some students who said her presence was "harming the flourishing of queer lives." When Waggoner was introduced by law school professor Kate Stith, the demonstrators displayed signs attacking the nonprofit Alliance Defending Freedom, for which Waggoner works. The protesters screamed profanities at the conservative speaker and threatened her with physical harm, chanting "protect trans kids" and "shame, shame" as police officers escorted her and Miller out of the building.
Waggoner commented on the chaos after the event, alleging that "the future of the legal profession in America is in dire straits." She told the Free Beacon, "It was disturbing to witness law students whipped into a mindless frenzy. I did not feel it was safe to get out of the room without security. Yale Law students are our future attorneys, judges, legislators, and corporate executives. We must change course and restore a culture of free speech and civil discourse at Yale and other law schools, or the future of the legal profession in America is in dire straits." Meanwhile, Miller echoed her debate opponent's remarks despite characterizing the ADF has a "hate group" during Thursday's panel. She said the disruption was an "ominous sign" for the legal profession. "As lawyers, we have to put aside our differences and talk to opposing counsel," she told the Free Beacon. "If you can't talk to your opponents, you can't be an effective advocate."
The incident drew heavy criticism from prominent figures across the political spectrum.
"Left-wing children at Yale are so fragile they can't even tolerate a bipartisan panel on the First Amendment. Pathetic," Arkansas Sen Tom Cotton tweeted.
"This is where woke bullsh*t is taking the world… supposedly ‘liberal’ students losing their minds over the concept of free speech. Insane," British TV presenter Piers Morgan wrote.
"This is happening because of an epidemic of cowardice among the people meant to be leading these elite schools," journalist Bari Weiss chimed in.
"This story worries me more than any anti-free speech event I’ve seen in the news. Most Americans don’t realize that we are ruled by an overclass and every one of these people will eventually be in it," author Eric Nelson offered.
"IMO this kind of safe progressive virtue-signaling does not help any marginalized group, it appears to be just an opportunity for a bunch slacktivists to get a line item on their CV that they protested something," columnist Steven Strauss added.
