'Wonder Woman 1984': Maxwell Lord's devastating plans may be a secret for now, but he sure makes a formidable villain

Pedro Pascal may have been the Mandalorian in the 'Star Wars' universe, but he's pretty much a villain when he essays Maxwell Lord in Patty Jenkins' upcoming 'Wonder Woman 1984'. The character has a rich history in the comics and could be looked at as Lex Luthor's equivalent. He was rich and manipulative, not to mention, downright sly. However, there is a different side to the story as well. He made his first appearance in 1987’s Justice League No. 1 where he was seen as a supremely crooked businessman and had plans of bringing together a Justice League. The version of comics that came in 2005 showcased him as a formidable villain.

Lord was initially shown as a character without any superpowers, but he was heavily under the influence of Kil%ore, an AI. Post the 'Invasion! crossover' epic in 1989, it was revealed to readers the villain had developed mind control as one of his abilities. While much of his role in the upcoming sequel is under wraps, his villainy and its impact on Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) will be surely explored. While she may have her clashes with Barbara Ann Minerva aka Cheetah (Kristen Wiig), what if it was Lord orchestrating the whole encounter? It doesn't come as a surprise considering the master manipulator that he is in the comics.

Pascal's Lord has also brought with him enough rumors. As reported by Screenrant, the baddie is also looked at as the man behind Steve Trevor's (Chris Pine) revival from the dead. And while we have no idea if this is true, this is a theory that cannot be disproved either. Guess Diana has got her hands full.

'Wonder Woman 1984' is directed by Patty Jenkins and will debut June 5, 2020.
