Woman pays for 20 hotel rooms to house homeless in Chicago amid record-breaking cold

She then posted about it on social media to raise awareness, and soon, donations of food, clothing and money were pouring in to help aid efforts to get the homeless off the streets
UPDATED FEB 4, 2019

As the cold wave gripping the United States saw temperatures in many areas around the country drop to record lows, one good samaritan ensured that the homeless would not be left behind to fend for themselves by housing them in hotel rooms and paying for them with her own dime.

According to CBS Chicago, Candice Payne realized how dangerous the sub-zero temperatures in Chicago — temperatures in the city had sunk to as low as -23-degrees Fahrenheit (-30-degrees Celsius) — would be to those without a roof over their head and instinctively charged 20 hotel rooms on her American Express card at a rate of $70 per room.

She then posted about it on social media to raise further awareness, and soon, donations of food, clothing, and money were pouring in to help aid efforts to get the homeless off the streets.
