Will Smith admits he was 'done' with wife Jada when she started seeing August Alsina during their separation
Will Smith told wife Jada Pinkett-Smith he was "done" with her and that he thought they would never talk again after their marriage went through a bad patch a few years ago during a dramatic episode of 'Red Table Talk.' The couple appeared on Jada's Facebook talk show to clear the air and share the details about a difficult time in their relationship after singer-songwriter August Alsina claimed in a recent interview that he had had an affair with the latter.
Speaking to 'Breakfast Club's' Angela Yee, August said he had been in a relationship with Jada and that Will had given him his "blessing" to go ahead, but that it was a very open affair and that there was no bad blood between any of them. On 'Red Table Talk,' Jada said there had been an "entanglement" with August after her marriage with Will reached the verge of collapse around four-and-a-half years ago. She said it was during a time when she and Will were separated.
"When Aug first came around, he was really sick. The outpouring for him from our family was initially about his health," Will said, explaining how his family's friendship with the singer-songwriter initially began.
"We found all those different resources to help pull from there. You and I were going through a difficult time," Jada interjected.
"I was done with your a**," Will said, laughing. "We were gonna separate. You go figure out how to make yourself happy and I’ll figure out how to make myself happy... I really felt we could be over."
Speaking of his affair with Jada, August had said, "I actually sat down with Will and had a conversation... He gave me his blessing. I totally gave myself to that relationship for years of my life, and I truly and really, really, deeply loved and have a ton of love for her (Jada). I devoted myself to it. I gave my full self to it. So much so that I can die right now, and be OK knowing that I fully gave myself to somebody... Some people never get that in this lifetime."
Jada, who had previously said the singer's claims were "absolutely not true" explained her view of the delicate situation. "The only person who can give permission in that particular circumstance is myself," she said. August was probably trying to communicate, I could see how he would perceive it as permission as we were separated amicably. He wanted to make it clear he's not a homewrecker, which he's not."
Will suggested they had problems because of how young they were when they got married. "We came together young and we were both broken in our own ways, and to be able to make mistakes without the fear of losing your family is so critical," he said.
Jada agreed, stating that "one of the things that I’m deeply grateful in this whole process between you and I is that we have really gotten to that new place of unconditional love."
Will replied, "Cause’ I wasn’t sure I was ever going to speak to you again. The fact that I’m speaking to you again is a miracle."
"You gotta go through some s*** to get the answers," Jada added. "I’m just happy because I definitely believe you and I never ever, ever thought we’d make it back."
