'American Horror Story' Season 13 is set to be a treat for fans. The upcoming installment will welcome beloved cast members including Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates, Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Gabourey Sidibe, Leslie Grossman, and the talented Jessica Lange. The Primetime Emmy Award winner's comeback both thrilled and shocked fans, and it has now been revealed that she agreed to return under one condition. Lange had previously reiterated that she would not return to the series. During her appearance at PaleyFest back in 2015, she firmly rejected the possibility. "We've had a great run," she said at the time, according to TV Line. "I have absolutely loved doing these four characters, and in all the madness, I loved the writers, actors, Ryan [Murphy], the whole insanity of it... to cut to the chase, yes, I'm done."

Murphy was able to get her back for a guest appearance in the eighth season; however, a regular stint remained a far-fetched dream. The last time she played a recurring character in the series was in Season 4. It has been around a decade since then, and the legendary actress has remained firm in her decision. As recently as last year, she was asked about a potential return, and she told SPIN, "Christ No."

Hence, Ryan Murphy, the co-creator of the anthology series, had his work cut out for him if he wanted to convince Lange to appear in Season 13 as a series regular. But Murphy was up for the challenge. He wanted to make the upcoming season special, and Lange was a key piece of the puzzle. "I just thought the number 13 was infused with so much stuff in the horror genre, and I wanted to do a greatest hits season," Murphy shared with Vogue. "I didn't know what it was, but I knew that I could only do it with Jessica." Murphy took Lange out for dinner to pitch his idea for Season 13. He believed it would be a challenge to get her on the same page, but she was very receptive.

Lange began talking about the show in a very "nostalgic" manner. "She was telling me about how everywhere she goes, young people just bombard her and ask for autographs because they love that show so much," Murphy explained. "She said some funny thing about how, 'Nobody comes up and wants to talk to [her] about 'Blue Sky' or 'Tootsie.' They just want to talk about 'American Horror Story.'" The 'Glee' co-creator took the window of opportunity and gave her the proposal. She agreed on one condition. "So we had dinner ... and I pitched her, and she said, 'Great. I'm in as long as I have a musical number,'" Murphy shared. The co-creator readily agreed.

Apart from showcasing her vocals, Lange will also portray all four characters she has played to date in Season 13. She will appear as Constance Langdon from 'Murder House,' Sister Jude from 'Asylum,' Fiona Goode from 'Coven,' and Elsa Mars from 'Freak Show.' To see the actress in all her glory, fans can tune in to 'American Horror Story: 13' on September 24, 2026, on FX.
