Will & Grace creator donates John Oliver's book about Mike Pence's gay bunny to all grade schools in Indiana
Just days after comedian and political commentator John Oliver's spoof book about Vice President Mike Pence's gay bunny topped the Amazon best-seller list, the co-creator of 'Will & Grace' decided to make it even more popular and announced that he will donate the books to all the public elementary schools in Indiana.
Showrunner, Max Mutchnick, on Friday said that he will donate A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo to the more than 1,100 public elementary schools in the state.
Pence's wife, Karen Pence, and daughter, Charlotte Pence, recently released a children's book called Marlon Bundo’s Day in the Life of the Vice President. The book is reportedly about how it is like to be the Vice President of the nation from the perspective of the Pence family rabbit named Marlon Bundo.
Shortly after the book was out, Oliver — on his show Last Week Tonight — announced the release of the parody book titled A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo — a book about the Pence family rabbit. There was a slight alteration about this rabbit though, in Oliver's version, the bunny is gay.
Oliver's version of the book is written by Jill Twiss and is illustrated by EG Keller. The parody book focuses on the rabbit rather than the life of the Pence family, according to reports.
Mutchnick, in a letter posted on his social media pages, wrote: "I would like to donate this copy of A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo to your library. After hearing about the book, I brought it home and read it to my twin daughters. It’s a poignant story about how love and community can rise above intolerance.” The letter was reportedly addressed to grammar school libraries in Indiana.
"Mike Pence has had an enormous platform in Indiana, and as it relates to gay people, he’s used it to spread a message of intolerance," Mutchnick wrote in his caption on Instagram. "By donating these books, I hope to counter those efforts and provide positive role models and a story of inclusion for children in Pence’s home state."
Oliver, during his show, had reviewed the Pences' book and said that he was disappointed to find out that the book's storyline takes the rabbit to Focus on the Family, which is a Christian organization that promotes gay-conversion therapy.
"Congratulations, Pence, you even managed to ruin Marlon Bundo!” Oliver said and then proceeded to the show's version of the book with the gay rabbit.
The audiobook of the comedian's version reportedly features Jim Parsons, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Jeff Garlin, Ellie Kemper, John Lithgow, Jack McBrayer, and RuPaul. A lot of these artists fall on the LGBTQ spectrum.
