Will Ben Carson resign? HUD secretary trolled as 'last one standing' with Donald Trump, Internet says 'wake him up'

Less than 24 hours after a mob of President Donald Trump's supporters stormed and vandalized the Capitol, two of his key administration officials resigned, including a Cabinet member, and more followed. However, US Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson was targeted by social media users for being the "last one standing" with Trump.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos became the second Cabinet member to resign on Thursday, January 7, citing Trump's handling of a violent mob that stormed the Capitol a day earlier as an "inflection point". "That behavior was unconscionable for our country. There is no mistaking the impact your rhetoric had on the situation," she wrote. DeVos, who was one of Trump's longest-serving Cabinet members, submitted her resignation in a letter to the president. She criticized Trump for using rhetoric that encouraged the violence that erupted and left four people dead.

Trump's administration's transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said the riot "has deeply troubled me in a way that I simply cannot set aside" and that she would be resigning. She was the first Cabinet member to resign.

Mick Mulvaney, Trump's former acting chief of staff, announced he resigned from his role as the US special envoy to Northern Ireland, the latest in a string of administration officials to leave after the president's supporters stormed the Capitol. "I called (Secretary of State) Mike Pompeo last night to let him know I was resigning from that. I can't do it. I can't stay," Mulvaney told CNBC. "Those who choose to stay, and I have talked with some of them, are choosing to stay because they're worried the president might put someone worse in," Mulvaney said. "I wouldn't be surprised to see more of my friends resign over the course of the next 24 to 48 hours." Matthew Pottinger, deputy national security adviser, also resigned in the wake of the unrest at the Capitol, according to one of the president's advisers. 

But even after so many cabinet members from the Trump administration resigned, Carson still stands with Trump. And as soon as social media users noticed this, they started trolling the HUD secretary. One user said, "Ben Carson is now the last remaining original cabinet member. Because in the Game of Thrones, you sleep, or you die." Another one wrote, "Is Ben Carson going to wake up from his nap and quit too, or is he riding this train to the last stop?"

"Ben Carson just woke up from his twice-weekly 24 hour slumber and asked his last remaining aid how his 2016 polling numbers are looking," one posted while another one wrote, "Last one out of the Cabinet is a rotten egg!! Ben Carson still doesn’t even realize he is apart of the Cabinet." Another one said, "Somebody wake Ben Carson up and tell him the ship is sinking." One uner joked, "Somebody tell Ben Carson to turn out the lights after everybody’s gone." While one said, "Ben Carson is unaware he even has a job to quit." Another said, "Stop being mean to ben carson guys. he is literally our new king i think. trump will be impeached and ben carson will be the last one standing."
