NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Greta Gerwig, the director of the blockbuster 'Barbie' movie, has shared if there is going to be a sequel for the blockbuster. The movie has smashed box office records earning $162 million in debut.

'Barbie' had the highest gross opening weekend which is the first for a film directed by women. However, Gerwing has shared that she had high hopes for the movie.

Will there be a sequel for 'Barbie'?

Gerwing told The New York Times that she poured everything she had into the film and that she doesn’t have another idea for a follow-up. “I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I’ll never have another idea, and everything I’ve ever wanted to do, I did,” she said. Starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling, Grewing shared her happiness for the movie becoming a success, she said, “I think it was a particular ripple in the universe that allowed it to happen." The director spent last week's Thursday and Friday spot-checking different theaters. "I’m so grateful. I’m so amazed. I’m at a loss for words, really," she shared with the publication, "...Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine something like this," she said.

'It felt so clear to me'

Gerwig also revealed how she became the director of the movie. She said that she and her partner, Noah Baumbach, wrote the script together and that Robbie, who is also a producer, supported her vision. "I was originally meant to just write it with Noah, and then we finished the script and that was the thing that made me want to direct it," she said before adding “It felt so clear to me: If they didn’t want to make that [version], I didn’t need to make it. Margot, as the producer and star, was really the first person to line up and say, ‘I want to do it her way,’” she said.

'Barbie' fans will have to be content with the one movie

Robbie also expressed uncertainty about a possible sequel in an interview with Time magazine earlier in June. She said that the first movie could lead to many different directions, but that she didn’t want to think too much about sequels while making it. “But I think you fall into a bit of a trap if you try and set up a first movie whilst also planning for sequels,” she said. As of now, it seems that 'Barbie' fans will have to be content with the one movie that Gerwig and Robbie have just delivered. Whether or not they will return to Barbie Land in the future remains to be seen.
