'Happy Gilmore 2' director drops major hint on secret Adam Sandler project and anticipation is building fast
One wouldn't be in the wrong if one were to instantly associate the genre of comedy with the great Adam Sandler. The 59-year-old actor recently hit the ball out of the park with his appearance in the sequel movie to the 1996 film 'Happy Gilmore' on Netflix. The sequel had been in the works for a long time and was directed by Kyle Newacheck. Furthermore, the duo has something more. According to a ScreenRant report, Newacheck is currently developing a secret comedy project with Sandler in a leading role.
Speaking from the red carpet at the recently held Directors Guild Awards, Newacheck opened up to ScreenRant's Ash Crossan about the likelihood of working with Sandler on another project in the near future. The director also addressed the ongoing rumours of a secret project that he's been developing with Sandler. "Me and the Sandman, we've talked. We have something cooking, but I don't want to say it right now. I don't want to say it, because I don't know exactly where it's at. But I am excited to do another one with him. I love Adam Sander, and working with him is just weird because he basically raised me with his comedy, so when I show up to set, I'm like, 'Well, I think that's funny because you taught me that that was funny!"
Before he was signed up to direct 'Happy Gilmore 2', Newacheck had directed Sandler and Jennifer Aniston in the 2019 comedy film 'Murder Mystery', which subsequently started streaming on Netflix. Therefore, it wouldn't be too far-fetched if Newacheck teamed up with Sandler for a third time, bringing a uniquely fresh take on a popular comedy film that crystallizes the best of both their experiences. Nevertheless, it is imperative to remember that the director has not revealed any potential release date or title.
Although Newacheck was known for his free-flowing, improvisational approach to comedy on screen, he took a different approach when directing Sandler in 'Happy Gilmore 2', as explained by a Louisville Public Media report. He reiterated the importance of having a brilliant screenplay as a thorough jumping point, further adding, "This screenplay was great from jump, You can’t improv a good story. You just cannot." Given his preference for bringing comedy to the centre stage of movies in terms of their tonality, Newacheck also remarked, "There’s not a ton of comedy-first movies right now. Everything’s action-comedy or dark-comedy. This ('Happy Gilmore 2') is a comedy-first movie. A family, fun, heartfelt comedy. Do they even make these anymore?"
Newacheck's upcoming confirmed projects include 'Ice Cold Heat' and 'Playas Ball'. On the other hand, Sandler was most recently seen alongside George Clooney in a Netflix movie titled 'Jay Kelly'. He has an untitled project with the Safdie brothers on the cards, along with 'Roommates'. 'Happy Gilmore 2' is available for streaming on Netflix.
