Prime Video’s ‘God of War’ finds its Atreus in 'Dead Ringers' star Callum Vinson and now the cast is stacked
Amazon Prime Video dropped a major update on who plays Atreus in its live-action 'God of War' series. After previous reports that Ryan Hurst would play the titular character, Kratos, the streamer announced that the 'Dead Ringers' star Callum Vinson will play the young god in the much-awaited show.
The other cast members listed at the time of writing include Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Max Parker as Heimdall, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as brothers Brok and Sindri, along with Alastair Duncan as Mimir. According to Variety, the official logline reads, "Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human."
The outlet further describes Atreus as the son who was raised by his mother, Faye. "He is an accomplished archer, has an affinity for animals, and is intensely curious about what lies beyond the confines of his forest home. After his mother’s death, Atreus is left with a cold, distant father whom he barely knows and who knows little about him in return. Nonetheless, Atreus yearns for his father’s approval and is desperate to prove he is strong enough to survive in a harsh and dangerous world."
The series will follow the storyline from the recent 'God of War' games, where Kratos has to raise his son while battling the Norse powers. At the time of writing, there is no official release date set for the game-to-TV adaptation. Pre-production is underway, along with casting, and speculation is rife that the earliest release date will be 2027. 'For All Mankind' creator, Ronald D. Moore, heads the project.
Inspired by Norse and Greek mythology, Sony developed the 'God of War' series with David Jaffe as the creator. The first game was released exclusively for PlayStation 2 in 2005 and achieved widespread critical and commercial success. Kratos is introduced as the primary character and a Spartan warrior serving the Olympians. After he is tricked by Ares into killing his own family, he vows revenge and becomes the new God of War. The series was later expanded with 'God of War II' in 2007, and 'God of War III' in 2010.
The series was later continued with a fourth instalment in 2018. It was set 150 years after the events of the third game, this time with Kratos in the world of Norse mythology. He embarks on a journey with his son, Atreus, to spread Laufey's ashes (Kratos's second wife). A direct sequel was later released in 2022 for PS4 and PS5.
For those unaware, Vinson's major acting credits include hit shows 'Long Bright River', 'Poker Face', and 'FBI: International'. He will also be seen in the third season of Netflix's upcoming political thriller, 'The Night Agent'. The upcoming series has already been greenlit for a second season. With Kratos regarded as one of the more iconic characters in gaming lore, it appears the streaming network believes it already has a hit on its hands.
