Game of Thrones season 8 episode 3 recap: Who survived the Battle of Winterfell?

While some of the heroes did fall, honorably, of course, some of our favorites have survived the epic battle which was fought mostly in pitch darkness and a snowstorm.

SPOILERS AHEAD

The Battle of Winterfell was full of surprises, but the greatest surprise of all time was just how many characters we didn't lose this week. While some of the heroes did fall, honorably, of course, some of our favorites survived the epic battle which was fought mostly in pitch darkness and a snowstorm.

Among the survivors were both of Daenerys' dragons, Drogon and Rhaegal, we can't say the same for Viserion though. Ghost made it too, after fighting with his master's army like the good boy that he is. Tormund Giantsbane, Yohn Royce, Grey Worm made it as well after showing heartwrenching bravery in the battle. Bran, along with Jon Snow, Sansa and Arya Stark, Daenerys, Jaime Lannister, Ser Brienne of Tarth, Podrick Payne, Varys, Missandei, Tyrion Lannister, and Samwell Tarly too survived.

Saving Bran did cost the Starks a part of their 'family' and as emotional and redeeming that it was, the fact remains that the North must lick its wounds and fight the other battle - the one between Cersei and everyone else.

Although this week we may be lucky, next week may be a different story.

In the preview for episode 4, we see Cersei Lannister and Euron Greyjoy readying the troops from King's Landing as Dany addresses what's left of their own troops at Winterfell. "We have won the great war, now we will win the last war," she says menacingly and as the trailer shows her on her ships again heading south, a voiceover says, "We'll rip her out, root and stone." Cersei may have the Greyjoy fleet and on the other side, she faces lots of bravery and dragons, but this was the same woman that blew up a citadel and committed mass murder - so anything could happen.

Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9/8c on HBO.
