LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: After exhausting most of their male superheroes over many decades, the comic franchises have been set on focusing much more on the women of these superhero fantasy worlds. DC being one of the giants is of course one of them and has been centering its lens on the women in their franchises for the past few years.

With this new progress in the superhero movie blitz, another DC Extended Universe film is set out to highlight one of the most loved female characters despite the film’s focus on the male lead. ‘The Flash’ has the two mega superheroes — Batman and the speedster himself but many signs are pointing towards Supergirl emerging as the most badass character and a fan favorite. The 27-year-old actress Sasha Calle will be making her DC debut as Supergirl in the film set to release on June 16.

How is Supergirl relevant to the movie?

Although the trailer does not reveal much about Supergirl’s origins, one can easily tell that she is not the Supergirl most people are familiar with. Her character, named Kara, appears much darker than her usual on-screen persona, especially if we were to compare her to the other Supergirl, Melissa Benoist. According to the trailer, she seems to have been imprisoned in a facility, given her uniform and her appearance.

What’s most baffling about the trailer is her entry into the story. Supergirl enters without a fancy superhero suit which gives her powers a certain raw nature. Batman and the Flash are cornered by the many facility guards but these guards are barely able to stand their ground once our heroine arrives on the scene.

These things suggest that Supergirl's character, in terms of powers, is replacing Superman, at least in this timeline if not the entire DCEU from here on. Just like Superman was taken in by the US government in the comics, we see Supergirl has faced this same fate in the trailer. This further proves that she will have a much more central role in the movie compared to her previous crossovers with the speedster's timeline.

How powerful is Supergirl?

The trailer reveals Supergirl’s powers are far more scary and threatening as compared to the other two heroes. The very scene of her saving Barry and Batman serves as evidence of her powers. She can fly, has super-strength, and possess heat vision, among other yet unrevealed powers. While General Zod is shown as the main villain feared by the main character in the film, Supergirl is shown kicking him to the ground, making him bite the dust easily.

Sasha Calle’s portrayal of Supergirl has made the role even more iconic. Her Supergirl has an angsty backstory and her circumstances are far more dire than the characters' earlier screen iterations on screen, who all had loving relationships on planet Earth to fall back on. As a replacement for Henry Cavill’s Superman, who was removed from the film’s line-up after the change in directors, Calle was also able to get his ‘approval’ for playing Supergirl

‘The Flash’ will be in the theaters on June 16, 2023.
