A 14-year-old unidentified boy too has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, criminal attempt to commit assault in the first degree with extreme indifference and two counts of the sentencing enhancing charge of being an aggravated juvenile offender. The Denver DA has filed a motion to charge the juvenile as an adult.
According to Denver Post, a witness told the police that Cabriales was sitting in her SUV on West Colfax at Interstate 25 when a suspect standing next to the passenger side of a dark four-door Honda fired a gun multiple times into the Range Rover before driving away. Eight bullet holes were found in the windshield of the Land Rover and two shell casings were found on the street near the car. The police are still investigating the cause of the attack, to determine whether it was a random attack or if Johnson and the unidentified juvenile were familiar with the victim.
Johnson and the 14-year-old were arrested the following the day after the shooting when a police officer recognized the Honda car from an earlier shooting at a McDonald's. DPD Officer Katie Phillips found a dark-colored, four-door Honda going north on Federal Boulevard near Exposition Avenue. She had investigated a shooting at a McDonald restaurant's drive-thru the previous day, and recognized the vehicle from the surveillance images she saw.
Phillips began following the Honda car, which eventually turned into a commander-authorized pursuit when the driver didn't pull over. The car crashed into a large wooden pole, hit a fire hydrant, and slammed through a chain-link fence, during the chase. The police arrested Johnson and the juvenile.
