Who is Marlena Segar?

Before becoming a popular TikToker, Marlena Segar was a graduate of the University of Edinburgh. Although she was studying social and economic history with environmental studies at the university, the youngster was always drawn to sex. So, in 2016, while she was still a student, she began her first volunteering work at Sexpression:UK, an independent charity that teaches secondary school students about sex.

Marlena wasn't keen on just sticking to the regular sex-education curriculum; she discussed various topics like porn and gender in her classes. In an interview with The Scottish Sun, she said, "A lot of the time, the class were actually pretty silent — I'd like to think they were taking it all in."

After graduating, Marlena applied for a position at Sh! Emporium in London, a female-focused sex shop that also specialized in educational classes."The interview was fairly standard, but I do remember walking past their sex toy-making laboratory, which they did in house — that was pretty exciting. I only had three weeks off after finishing uni before starting my job."

Although she thoroughly enjoyed her job and learned a lot, unfortunately, in April 2020, she was let go off from her work due to the pandemic. She then turned to social media to share her knowledge and skills she had acquired over the years. This was also the time when she started WeNudeToTalk on TikTok. She began posting various sex education-related videos ranging from topics such as body hair to sex scenes on 'Bridgerton'.

Soon, her videos began gaining traction and were getting over 100,000 views per video. "The views are great, and it's brilliant to be spreading the message. But it is when individuals reach out in the comments or message me and tell me how important these videos are to their lives that it is all worthwhile. I've had people tell me they come from really conservative backgrounds and their parents would never have told them what I've been speaking about," she said.

However, speaking about sex on social media comes with its own share of challenges. Marlena shared how a couple of her videos were pulled down from the platforms due to social media community guidelines. She said, "I've had several videos taken down for 'nudity and adult content', but once I've flagged them as 'educational' they are normally put back up again. It seems that the algorithms pick up on certain words — so like many other people posting about sex, I have to say 's3x' instead. It is annoying because it's just reinforcing the stigma against talking openly about sex."

Marlena is currently planning to start her sex therapy training in September. Her goal is to make sex seem less scary to youngsters and share all the information that they need to have.
