Who killed Dwayne Demkiw? NBC's true crime show 'Dateline' to probe brutal killing of limo driver
EDMONTON, CANADA: The killing of a Canadian limo driver named Dwayne Demkiw by an American man has sent shockwaves across not one but two countries.
The case remained unsolved for quite some time as Demkiw was assumed missing for a whole year, until his remains were found in another city. As the case unfolded further, grimmer details of a romantic rivalry came to light.
NBC's true crime show 'Dateline' is set to deal with this case that took years in trial to finally convict the murderer for his savage act. The episode 'The Case of the Man with No Name' will air on the channel on Friday, November 3, at 9 pm ET.
What happened to Dwayne Demkiw?
It was just like any other day, or rather night, on his job as a limousine driver in the city of Edmonton when Dwayne Demkiw suddenly disappeared in the early hours of May 31, 2015.
Demkiw was hired for a bachelor party that night, according to CBC News. Right after attending the birthday party of a friend named Kalya Polihronopoulos, he was on the clock driving around the party-goers.
Nothing had been out of the ordinary until later in the day when his roommate was informed that Demkiw's limo was stolen and burnt to a crisp. Demkiw's roomate, Bryan Ballendine then found out that he was nowhere to be found.
Demkiw was reported to be missing and there was a search for him, dead or alive. But it wasn't until almost a year later that his remains were found in the woods of a different town called Innisfail, as per Global News.
His close ones were shocked to find that anything this brutal could happen to him. Demkiw's body seemed to be cut using a machete. There were no suspects for quite some time.
Close friend's ex-boyfriend behind Dwayne Demkiw's murder
Surveillance camera footage and the statement of Demkiw's close friend Angel Chalifoux led the investigators to the killer- Jason Steadman.
Steadman was identified in footage retrieved from a parking lot where Demkiw was last seen. He was then confirmed to have some connection with the limo driver by his friends.
Steadman was Chalifoux's ex-boyfriend and their relationship had not ended on a good note, just weeks before Demkiw's murder.
Chalifoux's statement revealed that she was in a long-term relationship with Demkiw before she got together with Steadman. While they had broken up, Chalifoux and Demkiw remained close friends and Steadman apparently had problems with their closeness.
"Dwayne [Demkiw] said he was scared he was going to get a call from the hospital to pick me up or identify my body," she had said in the statement, according to CBC, citing that Steadman had become a bit aggressive with her until she broke up with him.
Although it was not clearly revealed in the trial, also given the fact that Steadman remained silent for most of it, the case seemed to be of romantic rivalry between the two men, leading to Demkiw's brutal death.
