ATLANTA, GEORGIA: Helicopters surrounded College Park and police K-9s scoured the woods near Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport for hours on Thursday, April 29, as multiple law enforcement agencies conducted a massive manhunt for an Arizona murder suspect who escaped police custody while being taken back to Phoenix. He escaped custody while in shackles at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta, Georgia, which is one of the busiest airports in the world.
According to the police, Jssan Carlos Strover, 20, was shackled at the waist and handcuffed in front of his body when he ran from two deputies at a rental car facility adjacent to the airport and escaped into a nearby wood line. He was last seen on April 29 morning at 4000 Global Gateway Connector.

Strover is wanted in Maricopa County, Arizona, on murder and aggravated assault charges in connection with a double shooting that left one man dead and another injured at a Phoenix bar on February 19. The man killed was identified as 32-year-old Walter Wood. Strover has been in custody at the Fulton County Jail since his arrest on April 12 during a raid at a Sandy Springs apartment complex.
Investigators have stated that Strover ran away at 7.15 am after the deputies removed his leg restraints so he could walk down a set of stairs. “At the time, there were two Maricopa County deputies with him,” Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat told reporters. “At the point that they proceeded out, they removed the leg restraints to escort him down the steps and at that point he pushed past them.” In a statement, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said Strover escaped while walking to a tram connecting them to the airport. The two deputies chased him into the woods, but he got away.

He was last seen donning a blue jacket, white T-shirt and black sweatpants but did not have shoes on, according to the police. He’s about 6 foot and 3 inches, weighs approximately 150 pounds and has tattoos on his neck. He was arrested in Sandy Springs earlier this month after authorities learned he was hiding at an apartment there and executed a search warrant, Sandy Springs police Sgt Salvador Ortega confirmed. He was taken into custody by Sandy Springs detectives, US marshals and Phoenix police detectives.
“SSPD’s role was to assist with the execution of the search warrant and of the murder warrant,” Ortega said. “He was then handed over to Phoenix PD homicide detectives. Prior to picking up Jssan Strover from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, appropriate protocols were conducted regarding transfer of custody,” the department said, adding the agency is grateful to the metro Atlanta law enforcement agencies taking part in the search. The police department considers Strover to be dangerous even though he is not carrying a weapon.
A reward of up to $2,000 has been offered for his capture. Officials have asked people not to approach Strover. Instead, people should call 911 or Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-TIPS (8477), text information to 274637 or visit StopCrimeATL.com.
