HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT: Weston Soule, found himself in hot water after law enforcement uncovered a magic mushroom cultivation worth an estimated $8.5 million, within his suburban home in Connecticut.

The extraordinary revelation came to light following an anonymous tip that triggered an investigation by the state police and local Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) officials, as per Daily Mail.

Cops found $8.5 million worth of psychedelic mushrooms

Thursday, November 2, marked a significant turning point in 21-year-old Soule's life, as his residence in Burlington, Connecticut, fell under the scrutiny of the authorities.

The investigation led to the discovery of what can only be described as a "large mushroom-growing operation."

The State Police, in a press release, revealed, "Detectives made contact with Soule and observed ventilation equipment throughout the residence consistent with those used in clandestine laboratories."

Even though Soule initially attempted to prevent detectives from entering his suburban residence, they were armed with search warrants, granting them access to the secretive domain.

What they encountered was nothing short of astonishing - photographs taken inside the property showcased numerous shelves lined with oversized bags of mushrooms, extending from the ceiling to the floor, dominating many rooms of the house.

In a visually arresting spectacle outside the house, law enforcement officials laid out a vast array of drugs that Soule was cultivating and preserving.

The ensuing haul was valued at a staggering $8.5 million, encompassing various stages of development for psychedelic mushrooms.

In a post-raid statement, neighbor Lee Hornfischer provided insights into the property's unusual activities. "They were running air conditioners, and it was a cold day, which didn’t seem right. They had air conditioners in the top windows, and also in the front of the house. There were more cars during the day. It almost seemed like a place of employment, more than a place to sleep at night," Hornfischer shared with Boston25News.

Psilocybin mushrooms are classified as Schedule 1 substances

In a futile attempt to shield his activities from the grasp of the law, Soule initially insisted that nothing he was growing was illegal.

However, under mounting pressure, he was compelled to acknowledge the undeniable truth - the mushrooms he cultivated were none other than psilocybin, the psychoactive compound found in what is commonly known as 'magic mushrooms'.

Psilocybin mushrooms, resembling their non-hallucinogenic counterparts, have the unique ability to profoundly alter the user's state of consciousness, plunging them into a surreal world of sensory distortions and psychological exploration.

In the eyes of the law, these mushrooms are classified as Schedule 1 substances, a category reserved for 'drugs, substances, and chemicals that are not currently accepted for medical use and have a high potential for abuse'.

The swift course of justice took Soule by surprise as he was promptly arrested on the spot.

He now faces serious charges, including possession with intent to sell/distribute narcotics and the operation of a drug factory, both of which carry a potential prison sentence of up to three years, along with hefty fines.

To secure his appearance in court, Soule was held on a $250,000 cash bond, ensuring he remains accountable for his actions.

His arraignment is scheduled for November 16 in the New Britain Superior Court, where he will have to answer for his alleged mushroom empire operating right under the noses of his unsuspecting suburban neighbors.
