FORT COLLINS, COLORADO: Sophia Smith is a professional soccer player who plays as a forward for the Portland Thorns in the NWSL and the US Women’s National Team. Smith from Fort Collins, Colorado, kicked off her world cup debut with two goals taking the USWNT to the national victory against Vietnam on July 21.

Smith is one of the USWNT’s forwards alongside Alex Morgan, Trinity Rodman, Alyssa Thompson, Lynn Williams, and Megan Rapinoe. She is dating Michael Wilson, a pro football player who is a wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL.

Who is Sophia Smith's Boyfriend? 

Smith and Wilson met at Stanford University, where they both played college sports. Smith was a star on the women’s soccer team, while Wilson was a standout wide receiver on the football team. They have been together since 2019 and have supported each other through various challenges and achievements.

Smith left Stanford in 2020 to join the Portland Thorns, while Wilson suffered a foot injury that sidelined him for a year. In 2023, Smith made the US Women’s World Cup roster, while Wilson was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the third round as per NFL.  Smith and Wilson often share their love on social media, posting photos and videos of their dates, travels, and celebrations. Smith congratulated Wilson on his draft day with a heartfelt message on Instagram: “You did it, baby. Through the highs and especially the lows, you never stopped doing everything right. it hasn’t been easy but it’s been worth it. I’m so proud of you.” She also posted a video of Wilson receiving the official call from the Cardinal’s athletic department: “I promise you guys just got the steal of the draft, thank you so much,” Wilson said in between tears of excitement.

Michael Wilson's career before NFL draft 

Wilson had to face a foot injury in 2020 at Stanford, where he was still voted as team captain and won the Jim Reynolds Award for his courage on and off the field. The "energetic wideout who plays the game with excellent urgency and effort," made a comeback in 2021 and then had to again face injury in the second half of the 2022 season. 

The athlete finished his college career with 134 catches for 1,662 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also earned a master’s degree in communication and a bachelor’s degree in management science and engineering as per his LinkedIn profile. He signed his NFL contract with the Arizona Cardinals in May 2023 and had his first press conference as a professional player.

He shared his excitement on Instagram, “This is what makes it all worth it.” He will be joining a talented offensive team that includes tight end Zach Ertz, who is married to Smith’s USWNT teammate Julie Ertz. Wilson wrote a sweet note for their first anniversary in 2020. "Life’s a blessing with you in it." Smith and Wilson made their relationship on Instagram official when they were freshmen at Stanford University. "Adventures in the city,” Smith wrote sharing a few photos embracing each other. Smith left Stanford after two years to join the NWSL in 2020. She shared her “difficult” decision on Instagram, saying she followed her heart to play soccer professionally. 

Smith was born in Fort Collins, Colorado, to Kenny and Mollie Smith. She has two older sisters, Gabrielle and Savannah, who are both basketball players. Her father played basketball at the University of Wyoming, while her sister Savannah was a record-breaking basketball player at the University of Northern Colorado. Smith broke the family legacy of playing collegiate basketball to pursue soccer. She started playing soccer at age five and joined the Real Colorado Club team at age 12. She became one of the top prospects in the nation and was named the Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year in 2017 as per US Soccer.
