Salma Elshimy: Inside life of TikTok influencer facing years in prison over 'inappropriate content'
Salma Elshimy, a TikTok sentation, is recently making headlines because of her 'controversial' posts on social media. The Economic Misdemeanor Court in Alexandria sentenced the Egyptian influencer -- convicted of filming and broadcasting 'inappropriate content', to two years in prison and a fine of EGP $3,230 ($105) on Tuesday, 18 April.
Millions of people follow the plus-size creator on all social media channels. On TikTok, she has a following of 3.4 million people and 18.8 million likes overall.

Why was Salma Elshimy convicted?
Elshimy is accused of posting 'inappropriate' videos on her social media platforms in exchange for payment based on how many people view them. Investigations by the police revealed that Elshimy posted videos to her YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram accounts that "offended public morality and modesty." She was taken to the Dekheila Police Station in Alexandria following her arrest. The Financial and Commercial Affairs Prosecution completed their investigation while they were in Alexandria.
"Content moderation is built on four pillars: remove violative content, age-restrict mature content, maintain For You feed (FYF) eligibility standards, and empower the community with information, tools, and resources," TikTok's community guidelines read.
What kind of videos does Salma Elshimy make
Elshimy is a model who frequently posted dance and lipsyncing videos. Her social media accounts included images of her wearing bodycon outfits. She recently posted a video of herself lipsyncing while wearing an Islamic dress. The model is also well-known for her outdoor photo assignments, which frequently land her in hot waters.
Evidently, Elshimy's encounter with the authorities over her content was not her first. She was detained in 2020 as a result of a photo shoot where she dressed as Cleopatra and posed in front of a pyramid, OUTKICK reported.
