Who is Martha McSally? Meet Arizona senator slammed for asking supporters to fast and give her campaign money
Arizona Senator Martha McSally made a rather interesting statement during an event on August 21. McSally, who is running for the senator's office, has fallen behind in the polls as well as funds as compared to her Democratic opponent Mark Kelly. So in a bid to urge people to contribute more to her campaign, she urged her supporters to "fast a meal" and donate that money to her campaign instead.
"We're doing our part to catch up, you know, to get our message out. But it takes resources. So, anybody can give, I'm not ashamed to ask, to invest. If you can give a dollar, five dollars, if you can fast a meal and give what that would be," said the Senator. Needless to say, McSally's suggestion didn't sit well with anybody.
Internet users were busy slamming the senator for her tone-deaf suggestion of "fast a meal" during the pandemic when many people are suffering due to job losses and health scare. A user tweeted, "#TrumpTrain2020 WHAT THE HELL IS THE MATTER WITH YOU? DO WITHOUT FOOD AND SUPPORT McSALLY: Embattled GOP senator urges supporters to donate to her campaign instead of buying food. Because nothing is more important than her. #MAGA."

Another user wrote, "Republicans & Trump are birds of a feather: they have no interest in putting in the work; no interest in finding common ground; no interest in using the powers of their offices to help anyone but themselves. Example: Martha 'Fast a Meal & Give Me the $' McSally #BlueWave2020."

"<new ad about McSally> This is a Chimichanga, an Arizona staple. Martha McSally wants you to skip a meal like this and give your money to her instead - because she'a a self-righteous, greedy loser. So eat up, Arizona - and tell McSally to take food off of someone else's table," joked a user.

McSally has definitely become a trending topic on the internet after she made her controversial funding pitch. In case you're wondering who exactly is McSally, we got you covered. McSally has been serving as the junior United States Senator for Arizona since 2019. Prior to that, she served as the Republican US Representative for Arizona's 2nd congressional district from 2015 to 2019.
Before dipping her toes in the bureaucratic world, McSally served the United States Air Force. She was in service from 1988 to 2010. McSally holds the distinction of being the first US woman to fly in combat and to command a fighter squadron. While serving in the air force, she sued the United States Department of Defense in 2001. In McSally v Rumsfeld case, she challenged the military protocol which required servicewomen from the US and UK stationed in Saudi Arabia to wear the traditional abaya to cover their bodies while traveling off base within the country.
In 2019, during a hearing on Sexual Assault and Misconduct in the Military, McSally revealed that she had been raped by one of her superior officers while serving in the Air Force. She did not disclose the name of the officer but did express displeasure over how the system addressed sexual abuse in the force.
