WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA: Rep Jamaal Bowman, the husband of Melissa Oppenheimer, has been criminally charged over a false Capitol fire alarm.

The far-left New York Democratic representative allegedly pulled the fire alarm in the Cannon House Office on September 30 just before the House was about to vote on a government funding bill to avoid a shutdown.

What is the charge against Jamaal Bowman

The Congressman has a single charge against him for "knowingly" raising a false fire alarm. The charge carries a maximum of six months sentence in jail and a $1000 penalty.

Cannon House Office Building's sign reads, "Emergency exit only push to open."

It also noted, "Emergency Exit Only Push Until Alarm Sounds (3 Seconds) Door Will Unlock in 30 Seconds," reported New York Post.

However, in the security footage, Bowman was jogging down the staircase after pulling the alarm and walking normally before leaving the building.

Jamaal Bowman agrees to pay the fine

Despite the New York Democrat's initial claims that he pulled the alarm by accident, he told reporters he is ready to pay the $1,000 fine.

Bowman released a statement following the criminal charge.

"I'm thankful from the District of Columbia Attorney General's office on this issue and grateful that the United States Capitol Police General Counsel's agreed I did not obstruct or intend to obstruct any House vote or proceedings," said the Congressman.

"I am responsible for activating a fire alarm, I will be paying the fine issued, and look forward to these charges being ultimately dropped."

He added that he is looking forward to putting the event behind him and "continue working hard to deliver for New Yorkers."
