WASHINGTON, DC: Democratic strategist David Axelrod has hinted that Joe Biden should reconsider his decision to run as the presidential candidate after a poll showed him lagging behind Donald Trump.
In a recent poll conducted by The New York Times and Siena College, it was found that the president is trailing behind GOP candidate Trump in several battleground states including Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, and Pennsylvania.
Taking to Twitter, Axelrod, who spearheaded Joe Biden’s ascension into the vice presidency in 2008, suggested the 80-year-old should consider exiting the presidential race.
Axelrod wrote, “Only @JoeBiden can make this decision. If he continues to run, he will be the nominee of the Democratic Party. What he needs to decide is whether that is wise; whether it's in HIS best interest or the country's?”

Pointing to Biden's "age" as one of the most burning concerns regarding his suitability to become the presidential candidate, Axelrod wrote, "The greatest concern is that his biggest liability is the one thing he can't change. Among all the unpredictables there is one thing that is sure: the age arrow only points in one direction."

Citing the poll results, in a series of posts, Axelrod wrote, "It's very late to change horses; a lot will happen in the next year that no one can predict & Biden's team says his resolve to run is firm. He's defied CW before but this will send tremors of doubt thru the party--not "bed-wetting," but legitimate concern."

He continued, "Yes, there also is risk associated with changing course now, as there is little time left for a primary campaign--and campaigns are how we test candidates. (Re @RonDeSantis.) But there is a lot of leadership talent in the Democratic Party, poised to emerge."

Terming Trump as a "dangerous, unhinged demagogue," he said, "The @POTUS is justly proud of his accomplishments. Trump is a dangerous, unhinged demagogue whose brazen disdain for the rules, norms, laws and institutions or democracy should be disqualifying. But the stakes of miscalculation here are too dramatic to ignore."

Internet slams David Axelrod
One of the social media users commented, "A little late to be asking this, wouldn’t you say?"
"I don't like your take on this. The Democrats could offer up Jesus himself as their candidate, and it still wouldn't change these polls," said someone else.

Referring to the 1983 Gallup Poll, one social media user said, "A question for David: When the Oct. 1983 Gallup came out showing Mondale up 6 on Reagan, do you think the most talented voices in the Republican party spent time questioning whether Reagan should step aside or putting their heads down to do everything to get him reelected?"

Someone else, however, defended Biden by saying, "If we believed swing state polls this far out then Mitt Romney would have been President. Even Newt Gingrich was ahead of Obama in the polls."

David Axelrod on Joe Biden's age
The former strategist for Barack Obama and the author of the book ‘Believer: My Forty Years in Politics,’ Axelrod has previously remarked that Biden’s age could be a liability for his 2024 Presidential run, per Axios.
In an interview with The New York Times, the political strategist said in 2022 while highlighting Biden’s age, “The presidency is a monstrously taxing job and the stark reality is the president would be closer to 90 than 80 at the end of a second term, and that would be a major issue.”
He said, “Biden doesn’t get the credit he deserves for steering the country through the worst of the pandemic, passing historic legislation, pulling the NATO alliance together against Russian aggression and restoring decency and decorum to the White House.”
However, he added, “And part of the reason he doesn’t is performative. He looks his age and isn’t as agile in front of a camera as he once was, and this has fed a narrative about competence that isn’t rooted in reality.”
