LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY: It has been revealed that Louisville bank shooter Connor Sturgeon’s father, Todd Sturgeon, reportedly served as the coach of the former’s basketball team at Floyd Central High School. The shooter went to Floyd Central High School in southern Indiana and was part of the institution’s basketball team named the Highlanders. He was reportedly nicknamed “Mr Floyd Central” at the school in 2016, The Independent reported.

The team was coached by Sturgeon’s own father, Todd, who was appointed to the role during a 2014 meeting of the New Albany-Floyd County Schools board of trustees. “We have a big challenge ahead, but we’re not trying to climb Everest here,” Todd told the Courier-Journal at the time. “We have to get basketball going the right way, and I think we can do it. There’s obviously some work to be done. To give the previous coaches their due, they started some things, the ball is moving a little bit now, and we just have to guide it in the right direction,” he added.

Who is Todd Sturgeon?

Todd Sturgeon has been identified as the father of Louisville bank shooter Connor Sturgeon. The former reportedly graduated from Brownstown in 1983 and served as a boys basketball coach at the University of Indianapolis. He coached the Greyhounds for 10 seasons and compiled a 151-126 record while leading the program to the NCAA Division II Tournament for three consecutive years, the Courier-Journal reported.

Sturgeon reportedly left Indianapolis to focus on his family and opened up about taking on the role as the coach of Floyd Central High School while speaking to the publication. “My wife said you were always looking for a sign, whether it was the right time to do something, and this time it was a sledgehammer to the head,” he said. “It’s the opportunities to coach my own sons. I have a special interest in getting the program turned around,” Sturgeon added.

The man completed his higher education with a bachelor of arts in history and political science from DePauw University, where he also served as an assistant under the late Royce Waltman for four seasons. More recently, he worked as the US history teacher at Floyd Central High School, the New York Post mentioned.

Todd Sturgeon stepped down as Floyd Central coach in 2022

Sturgeon eventually stepped down as the basketball coach at Floyd in 2022. He won 142 games and had just 45 losses with a pair of sectional titles during his tenure as the coach, WLKY reported. “Ultimately, looking ahead at what's best for the program. I just felt like over the next two-three years, the program would be in a better place if we got somebody new who's excited, enthusiastic, pistols blazing, and ready to come in and take the program to another level, hopefully,” he told the outlet at the time.

“I'm hesitant to use the word retired. When I got out of college coaching (at the University of Indianapolis), I used that word and then life has a funny way of twisting and turning. I'm going to continue to teach for the foreseeable future. I don't have plans to get back into coaching, but who knows,” he added while speaking about his retirement.
