Who is Christopher A Wray? Here's why Trump weighing in on firing FBI director triggering debate on Internet
With the presidential election only a few days away, it seems like the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director Christopher Wray’s job is in danger as President Donald Trump has expressed disappointment and anger in him. On October 8, Wray was criticized by the POTUS for not doing more investigation into the voter fraud, after Wray said that the FBI has no evidence of the same.
Trump told in an interview with Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo, “He's been disappointing. He doesn't see the voting ballots as a problem." Furthermore, Wray is also said to have irked the president with his public statements about Antifa and Russian election interference. So much so that Trump reportedly declined to give the director of the FBI the public vote of confidence. Even though the FBI has claimed to have maintained transparency and highlighted its corporation with the Republicans on other critical matters, it is unclear if Trump would fire Wray should he win the November elections, before the former’s 10-term as the FBI director comes to an end.
Who is Christopher A Wray?
Wray joined the US government as the Assitant United States Attorney in 1997 for the Northern District of Georgia. In 2001, he moved to the Justice Department as Associate Deputy Attorney General and Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General. He was nominated by former president George W Bush as the 33rd Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Criminal Division of the Justice Department.
During his tenure, Wray nearly quit his position in 2004 owing to issues with the illegal surveillance techniques the Bush administration had put in place under the Terrorist Surveillance Program. He announced his retirement from the post in 2005. Wray was appointed by Trump as the Director of the FBI in 2017, replacing James Comey.
Wray has publicly stated that he does not believe in the Russian 2016 election interference and its alleged links to Trump’s campaign. He was sworn in as the next director of the FBI in 2017, a ceremony of which saw the absence of Trump. During an interview with ABC in 2019, Wray debunked Trump’s infamous theory that the Ukraine government meddled in the 2016 elections. "We have no information that indicates that Ukraine interfered with the 2016 presidential election,” he noted. He has also called out Antifa for engaging in "organized tactical activity" at the local and regional level. Wray said that the FBI doesn’t consider Antifa "a group or an organization. It’s a movement or an ideology".
Meanwhile, the endless speculations surrounding Wray's possible firing from the role of the director of the FBI has sparked a debate among Internet users. While a few have condemned him for allegedly favoring Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and the democrats, some have noted that he's being targeted by Trump for pushing back on a few theories that the Republicans hold beliefs in.
One wrote, "Christopher Wray doesn't want to prosecute the Bidens he wants to hold the disgusting crap he has on Joe & Hunter Biden as a threat to hang over the possible new president's head. The FBI hasn't moved on much since the J Edgar Hoover days & if you think it has yr a fool." Another added, "There aren’t many you can trust in the Trump admin, trump getting the top spot. I trust Christopher Wray." A third tweeted, "So Christopher Wray goes live to say Russia is interfering to flame the fires of the left and says absolutely nothing about the Biden emails being genuine. I am convinced that Wray is part of the Deep State. He is a 'Never-Trumper'." Another wrote, "ohn Ratcliffe is just another Trump toadie but Christopher Wray makes me feel like he's really working to protect us and our votes. I'm thankful that there's a few people left in this administration who care about ensuring a safe and fair election."
