When did 'OMG Fashun' contestant Brittany Schall begin drawing?

During a recent conversation with Flaunt magazine, Brittany Schall delved into her artistic journey and explained her reasoning behind choosing to focus on creating hair portraits as her starting point. She shared profound insights into her love for drawing and the evolution of her distinctive style, offering a glimpse into the inspiration that fuels her creative process.

Schall's dedication to her craft and her commitment to honing her skills were evident as she discussed the intricacies of her work and the satisfaction she derives from bringing her subjects to life through her art.

"My thought process was that if I was able to draw hair in a photorealistic manner, I would be able to draw almost anything," she said.

The New York native has garnered recognition in the art community for her lifelike depictions, particularly her captivating portrayals of hair in various styles and conditions. She has even created exclusive pieces for Flaunt magazine, where she puts her unique spin on hair trends from the Spring of 2014.

The newfound interest in her works has sparked discussions about the underlying messages conveyed through her "portrait" pieces, which notably lack necks and facial features. This has also led to a broader conversation about the significance of hair in shaping our initial impressions of individuals.

She added, “While practicing drawing hair, I showed several colleagues my work. Unprompted, they openly started making comments like ‘That’s totally a bohemian dropout’ or ‘She’s middle aged, isn’t she?’ and most profoundly, ‘That’s a rich white girl’s blow out.’”

“I thought it was utterly profound how in-tune our culture is to catch the difference between a ‘rich’ woman’s blowout or an ‘imitation’ hair relaxer done at home. It made me realize even the most subtle nuances of hair communicate who we are—or maybe more importantly, who we attempt to be," the artist continued.

'OMG Fashun' contestant Brittany Schall describes working for other artists as a 'disenchanting experience'

Schall believes that being transparent and candid about her artistic process and influences is fundamental to her approach. After working as an assistant for various well-known artists, she was disheartened to discover that many of them tended to delegate the actual creation of their artwork to others, prioritizing their brand over their artistry.

“It was somewhat of a disenchanting experience. I also think it deeply skews the public’s perception of what art is. They are seemingly led to believe one individual can fill a lofty galley with enormous floor to ceiling painting all within six months of work time," she told the publication.

'OMG Fashun' contestant Brittany Schall provides free mentorship to strangers via her project 'Where’s North?'

Schall provides free mentorship to individuals through her initiative called 'Where's North?' as she strongly believes that “the arts should be community based and artists should support one another instead of seeing one another as competition.”

In simple terms, Schall feels that there is space for everyone to thrive. She went on to say, “Only by creating a sense of hierarchy in the art realm do we create finical, visual."

The mini apprenticeships, which are conducted over Skype, have the potential to last up to an hour. However, if you're in the mood for some spontaneous words of advice at this moment, feel free to ask for them. “My advice in technique goes as follows: Patience is the root of all skills, skill is the conduit to all talents, talent is nothing without time, time takes patience," she continued.
