President Donald Trump is considering Barbara Lagoa, a Miami-born federal appellate court judge, for the Supreme Court vacancy following the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Friday, September 18. Trump even praised Lagoa, 52, and said that she is "highly respected".

While departing the White House on Saturday, September 19, for a political rally in North Carolina, Trump referred to Lagoa and said, “She’s an extraordinary person. I’ve heard incredible things about her. I don’t know her. She’s Hispanic and highly respected.” Lagoa is on a list of possible Supreme Court replacements that Trump published earlier this month. She is one of the two women on Trump’s shortlist along with Judge Amy Coney Barrett of the US Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit, according to news reports.

As soon as Trump's statement came to the fore, people started slamming him. A user said, "THIS IS NOT YOUR DECISION TO MAKE... TRUMP! It is a decision to be made by the American people!" Another said, "I wouldn't agree with a lot of Lagoa's opinions, but she's definitely qualified. I'm surprised to see that Trump is actually choosing people who have the right backgrounds."

Some praised RBG and said, "RBG was an extraordinary person. Waaaaayyy beyond the standards of your admin I see. Yeah, I see that every day for 4 lousy years now. #VoteBidenHarrisToSaveAmerica"

Some questioned Lagoa and said, "The same Barbara Lagoa that broke ethic rules in order to stop 1+ million Floridians from voting in the November election? That Barbara? Yiiiikes" and "@realDonaldTrump Barbara Lagoa is a slam-dunk. highly qualified & will assure u re-election. Barrett is qualified too, but she's likely to get blocked & is very controversial - it would be an unforced error that could cost u re-election. it's a no brainer"

And some called her the most "feasible candidate" and said, "Justice Barbara Lagoa is the most feasible candidate. The President should not pursue the ideal at the expense of the possible. He’ll get at least one and maybe three more nominations in his second term."

Who is Barbara Lagoa?

Barbara Lagoa is a Florida native and the first Hispanic woman to serve at the Florida Supreme Court. If nominated to the nation’s high court by Trump and confirmed by the Senate, she would be the second Latino justice to ever serve in the United States of America. If she'll be nominated and confirmed, she would be the fifth woman to serve at the Supreme Court. After graduating from Columbia Law University, Lagoa worked as a pro bono lawyer for Elian Gonzalez's family and later as a federal prosecutor. She was picked by Governor Ron DeSantis to serve at the State's Supreme Court. "She has been the essence of what a judge should be,” DeSantis said when he nominated her.

Lagoa has served for a dozen years at the State's 3rd District Court of Appeal after being appointed by then Governor Jeb Bush. There she took part in more than 11,000 cases and wrote over 470 opinions. Lagoa is married to Paul C Huck Jr, an attorney and the couple has three daughters together.
