Ghislaine Maxwell makes bid for feedom as she hires Harvey Weinstein's lawyer to appeal 20-year term
TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA: Ghislaine Maxwell is pursuing a $10 million appeal against her sexual abuse conviction after a last-minute divorce agreement with her ex-husband. Maxwell's appeal against her 20-year prison term was in grave danger due to her ex Scott Borgerson's refusal to transfer funds from her $20 million trust.
The British socialite required money to pay a $730,712 (£788,302) unpaid legal fee as well as to pay the attorneys handling her appeal, which had to be submitted by the end of the last month. According to a family source, Maxwell, 60, was thrilled to hear that talks with Borgerson had progressed, ending their bitter dispute. "Ghislaine and her husband Scott Borgerson have reached a divorce settlement and are ready to fight back," said the source. "Her lawyers are confident that she has a strong case for appeal," reports Daily Mail.

According to reports, Maxwell and Borgerson married in 2016, having initially met in Iceland in 2013. She transferred £20 ( $2,40,88,000) million into a trust fund prior to her imprisonment, and Borgerson, an American tech millionaire, reportedly took over what was left of her wealth including £12.6 million ($1,51,72,920) from the sale of her New York residence was included. According to reports, Borgerson and Maxwell broke up over the phone in July 2020 when Maxwell was in jail in New York awaiting prosecution for her involvement in the Jeffrey Epstein affair. He later withheld the funds Maxwell needed to pay the Colorado law firm Haddon, Morgan, and Foreman and the additional $1 million needed to file an appeal after she was found guilty of five of six crimes involving trafficking and sexual abuse. Borgerson denied accusations that he was attempting to get a better divorce settlement. It will bring in about $10 million for Maxwell, the majority of which will go toward her appeal.
Who is Arthur L Aidala?
Maxwell has hired Harvey Weinstein's attorneys to try to have her conviction overturned. According to Arthur L Aidala, who is defending disgraced film tycoon Weinstein in his legal appeal, "the trial judge made mistakes" in Maxwell's case, reports Page Six. Additionally, he claimed that she was "mistreated" and "malnourished" when she was imprisoned.
As managing partner of Aidala, Bertuna & Kamins, PC, Arthur L Aidala is responsible for handling all aspects of the practice, including all criminal cases, civil litigation, and corporate matters. He has more than 25 years of experience practicing criminal law. In both Federal and State courts across the nation, he has defended many privately retained clients. In addition to claims of securities fraud, accounting fraud, bank fraud, RICO violations, bribery, bid-rigging, extortion, and embezzlement, he has handled complex cases on behalf of his clients covering all facets of white-collar crime. In relation to investigations and prosecutions by the Securities and Exchange Commission, FINRA, and the US Department of Justice, individuals, corporations, and businesses of various sizes have hired him, as per aidalalaw website.
It is thought that Aidala's appeals procedure will focus on determining "whether the judge who decided the case made the correct legal ruling," rather than on establishing Maxwell's guilt or innocence. The current word count of the 30-page appeal is 22,000 words and is due on Tuesday, February 28.
