Who is Andy Beshear's wife? Democratic governor wins re-election in Kentucky after defeating Republican AG Daniel Cameron
LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY: Andy Beshear, the Democratic incumbent governor who has been married to Britainy Beshear for 17 years, has been re-elected to a second term in the state of Kentucky.
The 45-year-old governor reclaimed his office after defeating Republican state Attorney General Daniel Cameron by more than five points in an expensive and hard-fought race on Tuesday, November 7, according to Daily Mail.
Beshear, the son of former Democratic Gov Steve Beshear, was first elected in 2019 when he won over then-Governor Matt Bevin.
While much of Beshear’s first term was dominated by his response to a series of natural disasters and the pandemic, his re-election campaign was often focused on dire warnings about the future of abortion rights.
During his victory speech Tuesday night in Louisville, Beshear pledged to be a governor “who serves all our people, regardless of your party and regardless of who you voted for.”
“Tonight Kentucky made a choice. A choice not to move to the right or to the left, but to move forward for every single family. A choice to reject Team R or Team D and to state that we are clearly one "Team Kentucky,’” he said.
Beshear also mentioned that this win came after he repelled assaults from five super PACS, two of which were led by the state's GOP senators, Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul.
“Just look at what we were up against!” Beshear said, adding, “All running ads full of hate and division. And you know what? We beat them all at the same time.”
Sandwiched between November's presidential election and the midterm elections of the previous year, Kentucky has been a highly anticipated race throughout the off-year elections.
A look into Andy Beshear’s personal life
Part of Beshear's road to success stems from his lineage as a member of Kentucky political royalty. Born on November 29, 1977, he is the son of Jane Beshear and Steve Beshear, a former two-term governor of the state.
He graduated in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, and then attended the University of Virginia School of Law, receiving a Juris Doctor in 2003.
He was selected in November 2015 to serve as Kentucky's 50th attorney general, a position he held from January 2016 until December 2019.
As attorney general, Beshear sued Bevin several times over issues such as pensions and ultimately defeated him by just over 5,000 votes in the 2019 election.
In 2006, he married his wife Britainy Beshear, with whom he shares two young children – Will and Lila. Britainy is a social worker, who previously volunteered at her children's school and also Family Scholar House.
In 2016, Beshear and his wife founded the Hope Gallery art exhibit that features works by youth assisted by Family Scholar House. From 2013 to 2019, she served on the board of directors of Maryhurst, an organization that provides social services.
Internet rejoice over Andy Beshear’s victory
Beshear announced his victory in a Twitter post, writing, “Tonight, our Commonwealth rejected anger politics and proved there is more that unites us than can ever divide us.”
