GAINESVILLE, GEORGIA: A babysitter from Gainesville, 23-year-old Abby Elizabeth Chosewood, has been arrested following allegations that she strangled and "nearly killed" a one-year-old child. She is facing charges of felony aggravated assault and felony cruelty to children for her alleged actions against the child.

According to the Gainesville Police Department's Facebook post in February read, "In February 2023, Chosewood allegedly suffocated and/or strangled a one-year-old child causing bodily harm."

Who is Abby Chosewood?

The 23-year-old is an aspiring ESPN reporter. When Chosewood was arrested last week for allegedly suffocating or strangling the baby in February, the cops said the infant "was as close to death as you can get."

Chosewood, a student, said on her website she wanted to be a sideline journalist for the sports network ESPN when she graduates, states Daily Mail.

‘We'll probably never know what happened’

The authorities faced challenges in gathering evidence against Chosewood due to the lack of nanny cameras to record the incident. This resulted in several months passing before they were able to build a case against her. However, Gainesville Police's Lt. Kevin Holbrook said to Law&Crime in a podcast that it "is a case in which the child was probably as close to death as you can get."

"The child received numerous injuries, numerous broken bones to include a femur. A femur is one of the strongest bones we have in our bodies," he added. "We don't know exactly what happened in that house, and we'll probably never know. And we're just hoping that it didn't occur to any other children," Holbrook said.

Lt Holbrook told WSB-TV, "It is unthinkable and there is nothing for us to go on exactly why this did happen. This is something that we may never know — as when the child obviously is too young to tell us the truth. But obviously, Chosewood knows exactly what happened and hopefully it’ll come out in court."

Following the investigation into the incident, Chosewood was booked into the Hall County Jail. However, she was released on a bond on July 31 after paying $27,900, as reported by WSB-TV.

Information on the incident is limited to protect privacy

Chosewood reportedly was arrested earlier as well. In 2021, she pleaded guilty to three charges, including identity and financial transaction fraud. As a result, she received a sentence of two years probation for those crimes.

The Gainesville Police Department is diligently working on the case and actively investigating the incident. Due to the sensitivity and seriousness of the matter, updates may be limited to protect the integrity of the investigation and to respect the privacy of those involved. Further information will likely be provided by law enforcement as the case progresses and more details come to light.
