MOSCOW, IDAHO: Arun Dash, a 28-year-old engineering student at Washington State University, got a new downstairs neighbor in his Steptoe Village apartment complex in August. He understood why Bryan Kohberger was anxious to make friends at first. For residents who aren't undergrads partying around, the college town can feel isolating.
Bryan Kohberger, who has been charged with fatally stabbing four University of Idaho students in November, went out of his way to introduce himself and even proposed plans to hang out, Dash said.

Dash, who moved to Pullman from India for his studies, said, "He asked me what I was studying, where I am from. He would make just friendly small talk."
Kohberger's arrest in the November 13 murders of Xana Kernodle, Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin and Madison Mogen had initially led to the assumption that he was a lone wolf who mostly kept to himself. However, Dash and his roommate's words paint a completely different picture.
According to them, Kohberger was a very outgoing student who left people either impressed or put off. They claim he frequented Pullman coffee shops and local craft-beer establishments, and even attempted to hang out with his neighbors.
According to Insider, Dash's roommate, who asked not to be named out of fear of harassment, said Kohberger gave him his phone number and repeatedly asked him to hang out with him. "He talked to everybody, he was a very chatty person — not charming, but outgoing," the roommate said. "He would ask me to hang out."
One day, the roommate casually suggested that they work out together. "He seemed like a very fit person, so I asked if he wanted to come to my gym with me," he said. Kohberger declined, saying he already had a commitment. Later, Kohberger asked him to join him for coffee but he was busy at the time.
Over time, however, he started to avoid Kohberger because the conversations were endless, Dash's roommate claimed. He said that he would quicken his step whenever he saw Kohberger come towards him to appear in a hurry so that it wouldn't look awkward to give Kohberger a passing hello rather than starting a whole conversation. "I know if I start, he won't stop," he told Insider.
