MAYWOOD, ILLINOIS: Sergio Brown's mother was discovered dead in a creek bed in suburban Chicago, Daily Beast reported citing investigators.

Sergio, a former NFL player, was reported missing with his 73-year-old mother Myrtle Brown on Saturday, September 16. Officials say they are still unsure of the whereabouts of the 35-year-old, per NBC Chicago.

Sergio Brown was a standout Maywood high school player who went on to have a successful six-year NFL career as a safety with the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts.

What happened to Sergio Brown's mother?

Police said the former NFL player Sergio Brown is missing and that his mother was discovered dead on Saturday near a creek behind her home.

According to a news release from the Maywood Police Department, family members notified authorities when they claimed to have been unable to locate or get in touch with either of them.

The news release stated, "Maywood Police Officers initiated a missing person report and began making attempts to locate both individuals."

"Myrtle's lifeless body was found after a thorough search by authorities next to a creek behind her house," it added.

Myrtle, 73, suffered severe injuries as a result of an assault, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, and her death was ruled a homicide, per CNN affiliate WBBM.

Search for Sergio Brown continues

Residents on Nichols Lane in Maywood are not used to seeing police lights and crime scene tape. "The whole block was filled with family and police," stated Brown’s next-door neighbor Carlos Cortez.

The events that were taking place in his neighborhood on Saturday caught Cortez's attention. Later, he discovered that Brown, 73, and her son were the subject of concern.

"Myrtle, she was an outstanding woman, and I'm hoping she's in the right place and she's with God. Like I said, I never would've expected this in a million years," Cortez said.

"You only watch this on TV. And to know this happened next door, it's a tragedy," he added.

While police continue to hunt for Sergio, neighbors are assisting with a timeline. Cortez told CBS 2 that he last saw the two on Thursday. Besides, the police have apparently noticed something on the ring doorbell.

"They seen him taking out the trash, and they seen him have a bonfire where he burned all her clothes," he stated. What was seen on camera resembles what Cortez claims to have learned from the family.

"They said he wasn't himself the last few months. He was out of his mind," Cortez claimed.

"I just hope that the family has closure, and I'll be praying for them. I hope the family gets through this. And I'll keep them in mind in my prayers," he added.

Anyone with information on Sergio Brown's whereabouts is urged to contact local law enforcement, according to Maywood Police.
