Kate Bush shares heart-touching statement for being honored by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Just hours before the induction ceremony held at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, Kate Bush took to her website to share a message, writing, "I am completely blown away by this huge honour – an award that sits in the big beating heart of the American music industry."
She continued, "Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me. I never imagined I would be given this wonderful accolade."
Bush also acknowledged the resurgence of her 1985 hit 'Running Up That Hill' after its inclusion in the popular Netflix series, Stranger Things, last year. The song climbed the charts once again, reaching No.3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
"Last year was such a surprisingly successful time for my track Running Up That Hill, and I’m sure that a lot of you who’ve voted me into the RRHOF also drove that track up the charts," stated Bush.
Despite her immense gratitude, Bush regretfully announced her inability to attend the induction ceremony. She conveyed that, for her, the real honor lies in the recognition and support from her fans and peers in the music industry.
"The RRHOF has welcomed me into the most extraordinary rostrum of overwhelming talent," expressed the 'Wuthering Heights' singer.
Reflecting on her own musical influences, Bush revealed her childhood admiration for Elton John. She spoke emotionally about sharing the induction with Bernie Taupin, John's writing partner.
"I poured over his music, longed to be able to play piano like him, and longed to write songs that could move people in the way his work moved me," noted Bush, extending her congratulations to Bernie Taupin and all the inductees.
She concluded, "Music is at the core of who I am, and, like all musicians, being on the journey of trying to create something musically interesting is rife with feelings of doubt and insecurity," she wrote. "I’m only five foot three, but today I feel a little taller."
Who are the other inductees of the 2023 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class?
In addition to Kate Bush, the 2023 class of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees includes Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, the late George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine, and The Spinners.
Several other artists were also recognized with honorary awards, including DJ Kool Herc and Link Wray for their musical influence, and Chaka Khan, Al Kooper, and Bernie Taupin for the Musical Excellence award.
The induction ceremony saw Big Boi delivering a speech to present Bush's induction, and St Vincent performed a touching tribute to the iconic singer. The event was broadcast live on ABC and Disney+ from Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
Fans express their love for Kate Bush on social media
Soon after the news of Kate Bush's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was announced, fans flocked to show their love and appreciation for the singer.
One wrote, "Loved Kate Bush since 1986. Only Kate Bush can sing her own songs. No one is able to do it properly when covering Kate, not a single one. This is a terrible "Running up that hill" cover, absolutely painful to listen to, aka how to destroy a song," showcasing the enduring appeal of her music.
Another fan stated, "I have loved Kate and her music since 1978. There is not an artist out there who is more full of talent and heart. I just glad that a popular tv show exposed her to America. Because Americans did not know her."
A person proclaimed, "I like St. Vincent, but no one can do Kate Bush. Maybe you should’ve asked Bjork or just went in an entirely different direction for a few more tribute songs that she was due."
One more enthusiastic supporter simply said, "I love her."
