When will 'The Good Fight' Season 5 return? Here's what we can hope to see as Diane takes on Memo 618

We take a look at where 'The Good Fight' left off when the show is expected to return and what we can expect from Season 5

'The Good Fight' ended far too soon, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic halting production and leaving the series high and dry at 7 episodes. But that only means that when it returns, the show is going to hit the ground running, continuing off of Season 4's unresolved storylines and barrelling headfirst into all new ones. We take a look at where the series left off, when we can expect it to return, and what we'd like to see most when it does.

Where we left off

One of the biggest mysteries of Season 4 was Diane Lockhart's (Christine Baranski) discovery of Memo 618 — a document that appears to give the rich and powerful the freedom to ignore the law entirely. Diane's made it her mission to uncover Memo 618 and bring it into the public eye, but she's had some challenges. One of the only witnesses to the use of Memo 618 is Diane's former colleague, Julius Cain (Michael Boatman), who has finally agreed to go on record about the Memo despite the threat it poses to his career. Days after his first official testimony, however, Julius is framed and arrested for bribery charges and it's only a matter of time before Diane herself is in the crosshairs.

In the meanwhile, the law firm of Reddick, Boseman & Lockhart finds themselves under the oppressive thumb of their new corporate owners, STR Laurie. Though the firm appeared benevolent at first, it showed its hand when it exploited a legal loophole, meaning that the partners would be unable to buy back their own firm — leaving the partners no other option but to conduct their business affairs in the way that STR Laurie demands them to, even if it goes against the partners' personal principles.

What we'd like to see happen

Obviously, the thing that needs to be addressed above all else is the mystery of Memo 618. As Diane pointed out, the very existence of the Memo undermines the concept of justice and law itself if the rich can just buy their way out of any legal troubles they run into. It seems that the corrupted conspiracy behind the Memo runs all the way to the top, however, and dragging it from behind closed doors and into the light of day is going to be one of Diane's biggest battles yet.

We also want to see Reddick, Boseman & Lockhart be able to take back control from STR Laurie. The company may have the firm bested in legalities at the moment, but the firm boasts of some of the best and brightest lawyers in the Boston area. If there's a way for the law firm to regain its own independence, Adrian Boseman (Delroy Lindo), Liz Reddick (Audra McDonald) and Diane Lockhart will be sure to find a way.

When is it returning?

While CBS announced that 'The Good Fight' would be returning for a fifth Season ahead of its Season 4 finale, it has not announced when the show will be returning. 'The Good Fight' tends to have long gaps between each Season, and while some of Season 4's episodes will be transferred to Season 5, the slowing down of production due to the pandemic might mean that the show could return as late as 2022. At the earliest, we can expect the show to return in the fall of 2021.

In the meanwhile, however, all episodes of Seasons 1-4 of 'The Good Fight' can be streamed on CBS All-Access.
