When will 'MacGyver' Season 5 return?
Rebooting a classic piece of work is not always a picnic. And more often than not, it is usually a dud. Especially if its original was massively popular. But CBS’s ambitious reboot of the 80’s ABC series ‘MacGyver’ did it and did it well! The show has received acclaim from fans all over, and it concluded its fourth season on May 8.
Where we left off
Even though 'MacGyver' Season 4 ended satisfactorily, the threat of Codex, the global eco-terrorist organization, which has hounded Angus ‘Mac’ MacGyver (the titular lead played by Lucas Till) and the Phoenix Foundation all season is far from over. The board's been reset and the players will be different but rest assured, Codex will be back with a vengeance.
The season finale saw the death of Mac's aunt and Codex leader Gwendolyn Hayes (Jeri Ryan). But as the last few episodes have revealed, Gwen was never the all-powerful head of Codex that we thought she was. Above her in the hierarchy at the organization are Leland (Tobin Bell) and the Codex council, a group that has apparently existed since the time of the Black Plague. While Codex's immediate plans were thwarted by the Phoenix Foundation, the leadership managed to go into hiding so the head of the proverbial snake is still intact.
What we'd like to see
With his aunt out of the picture, Mac won't have any qualms about crushing Codex whenever they rear their heads again. It will be interesting to see how Mac takes on Codex, now unencumbered by familial ties.
The season 4 finale also revealed that the Phoenix Foundation is taking concrete steps to ensure that climate change is addressed as a pressing issue and given the proper importance it deserves, which could hopefully make Codex's mission obsolete. Whether that will stop them or not is a different matter altogether.
When is it returning
In May 2020, CBS renewed the series for a fifth season. While no official release date has been announced as of yet, season 5 of ‘MacGyver’ is estimated to arrive on CBS in late 2020 or early 2021.
