Guy Ritchie’s delayed thriller ‘In The Grey’ with Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal finally gets a release date
There's little doubt about the fact that popular director Guy Ritchie and 'The Witcher' star Henry Cavill dish out riveting action-thrillers every time they work together. From the director and the star who led 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E' and 'The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare', co-starring 'Reacher' star Alan Ritchson, comes the action heist-thriller movie 'In The Grey'. The upcoming movie, which also stars Jake Gyllenhaal alongside Cavill in a leading role, was plagued by persistent delays and deferrals before independent studio Black Bear stepped in and is set to release it exclusively in theatres on May 15 in collaboration with Lionsgate.
The official plot synopsis of 'In The Grey' reads, "In The Grey follows a covert team of elite operatives who live in the global shadows, as comfortable wielding power and influence as they are with automatic weapons and high explosives. When a ruthless despot steals a billion-dollar fortune, the team is sent to steal it back on what would be, for anyone else, a suicide mission. What begins as an impossible heist gets much worse, spiraling into an all-out war of strategy, deception, and survival."
The ensemble cast includes Eiza González, Rosamund Pike, Kristofer Hivju, Emmett J. Scanlan, Carlos Bardem, Jason Wong, Michael Vu, and Fisher Stevens.
Black Bear also released a full trailer for 'In The Grey,' and it does go out with quite a bang. While Gyllenhaal establishes his character of Bronco as a loud-mouthed American, Cavill's Sid comes across as the definition of loquacious charm. The two have a shared expertise in blowing things up and shooting their way through all troubles.
The two are kept on a short leash by Gonzalez's character, Sophia. After the entry of billionaire despot Salazar into the picture, the stakes are further raised to the point that a regular job becomes a fight for survival for both Bronco and Sid. Salazar has his own island, complete with his own militia and heavy weapons. It is at this lion's den that Sid and Bronco must intervene, so that the billion-dollar fortune that Salazar has stolen can be recovered.
According to Variety, 'In The Grey' was announced for the first time in 2023 and wrapped filming later that year. The cast had been granted an interim agreement by SAG-AFTRA during the then-ongoing strikes so they could finish their dates on the film. Originally slated for a theatrical release in early January 2025, Lionsgate pulled the film because post-production wasn't complete by then. This was followed by Black Bear stepping in, after launching its own distribution system in the United States. 'In The Grey' is produced by Dave Caplan, Ritchie, Ivan Atkinson, and John Friedberg.
