Priyanka Chopra's pirate thriller ‘The Bluff’ off to strong opening - here's where you can stream it
If the string of positive reviews is any indication, 'The Bluff' has lived up to every bit of the hype it created when Prime Video released the trailer last month. Starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and 'The Boys' star Karl Urban, the much-awaited swashbuckling pirate-actioner dropped on the streamer on Wednesday.
Set in the Caribbean in the 1800s, the story follows Jonas' character Ercell Bodden, a former pirate trying to lead a peaceful life in the Cayman Islands. However, her violent past catches up to her, forcing Bodden to confront it in the bloodiest and savage way possible. The cast also includes Safia Oakley-Green, Temuera Morrison, and Ismael Cruz Cordova in key roles. The film is currently available to stream on Prime Video after 12 a.m. PT and 3 a.m. ET release.
The pirate feature is directed by the Russo Brothers with Joe Ballarini, Frank E. Flowers, Kassee Whiting, Ari Costa, Chris Castaldi, Nick Van Dyk, Thorsten Shumacher, Sarah Halley Finn, and Zoe Saldaña serving as the executive producers. The film opened to positive reviews with most critics praising the action sequences and Jonas' performance. The official logline reads, "Ercell 'Bloody Mary' Bodden thought she had escaped her violent past as a pirate, finding peace in the Cayman Islands with her loving husband, T.H., their son, Isaac, and her sister-in-law, Elizabeth. But when her notorious former captain, Connor, arrives seeking revenge, Ercell’s world is torn apart."
"Forced to confront the demons she’s tried to bury, Ercell is thrust back into a deadly game of secrets and survival. Armed with lethal swordsmanship, cunning traps, and a fierce will to protect those she loves, she wages a brutal war against Connor’s merciless crew. Ercell’s fight to save her family becomes a journey of redemption, as she reclaims her power and embraces the warrior she once was."
Ahead of the film's release, director Flowers spoke glowingly of Jonas and her preparation for the role. "Priyanka is a bada*s, she’s a warrior, a mom, a producer. She’s willing to get dirty. We wanted the action to feel real. There are scenes where she’s rolling in the dirt, fighting men twice her size. It’s authentic – she sweats, bleeds, and fights through it. It’s not glam; it’s grounded in reality," he told The AU Review.
Up next, Jonas will appear in Season 2 of Prime Video's futuristic spy thriller 'Citadel'. The series finished production in November 2024, but had a significant delay with a spring 2026 date pencilled this time around. In related news, spinoffs 'Citadel: Honey Bunny' and 'Citadel: Diana' were officially canceled.
Season 1 followed Richard Madden and Jonas as secret agents, Mason Kane and Nadia Sinh having their memories wiped after being under siege by a rival agency. The thriller follows them as they fight to reclaim their identities. The second season is expected to comprise six episodes like its predecessor. Her other major upcoming project is 'Judgement Day', coming later this year. As for Urban, he will next be seen in Season 5 of 'The Boys', releasing in April this year.
'The Bluff' is streaming on Prime Video.
