When and where to watch 'Christy'? Sydney Sweeney's boxing biopic hits streamers after forgettable BO run
Sydney Sweeney's boxing biopic, 'Christy,' has finally hit streamers. Directed by David Michôd, who co-wrote the film alongside Mirrah Foulkes, the film follows the story of Christy Martin, the former professional boxer who rose to fame as the country's best-known female boxer in the 1990s.
Despite the hype, the film, however, was a disappointment at the box office. It made an estimated $2 million against a budget of $15 million. Sweeney's feature now hits streaming platforms, even as her latest thriller, 'The Housemaid', continues to have an impressive run at the cinemas. 'Christy' is streaming on Prime Video and Apple TV+.
The official logline reads, "Christy Martin never imagined life beyond her small-town roots in West Virginia—until she discovered a knack for punching people. Fueled by grit, raw determination, and an unshakable desire to win, she charges into the world of boxing under the guidance of her trainer and manager-turned-husband, Jim. But while Christy flaunts a fiery persona in the ring, her toughest battles unfold outside it—confronting family, identity, and a relationship that just might become life-or-death."
Speaking to THR about the biopic's reception, Sweeney said Martin's review was all that mattered to her. "I put a lot of love and hard work into this, so it feels good that people are recognizing that and that the story is resonating with people," the 'Anyone But You' star said. "But for me, I’ve always said Christy’s opinion is the only one that matters to me. I did this for her, and she loves it, so I’m good."
Vulture's Chris Lee detailed the reason behind 'Christy's poor BO run. "According to insiders with knowledge of Black Bear’s plans for the film, Christy ultimately fell victim to economic crosswinds that are buffeting the independent film world," Lee wrote, "And now executives at the company are trying to assign blame. “Rolling out a little movie — even with a big star — has become very hard,” says a Hollywood talent agent with longstanding ties to the indie film world."
"You used to be able to do limited releases. This movie, The Rock movie ('The Smashing Machine') should have come out on like four screens and then platformed into wide releases. Now they come out on thousands of screens and are fighting against big movies like Avatar. You can’t do that because you can’t hold the screens! That’s the death of the independent film business that no one is talking about.”
'Christy' is available to stream on Prime Video and Apple TV+.
