'WWDITS' Season 2 Ending Explained: Will the four vampires ever feel safe around Guillermo again?
Spoilers for ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ Season 2 finale, ‘Nouveau Theatre Des Vampires’
Season 2 of ‘What We Do in the Shadows’, FX’s vampire mockumentary, ended on a tense note. Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) killed hundreds of vampires, and all in front of his masters - Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), Laszlo (Matt Berry), and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch). Where do things stand now? In the season 2 finale, Guillermo left the vampires to fend for themselves and went back to his mother’s house because he was unable to reconcile two very important things.
One, he badly wanted to become a vampire. And two, he was a natural vampire slayer. After all, his ancestry boasted of none other than Van Helsing, the legendary vampire killer. Add to that, Guillermo was dissatisfied with his life with Nandor and the others. And of late, he found himself uninterested in fulfilling their every demand. But when Guillermo realized that his masters were in danger and that they were tricked by the Vampiric Council to walk right into their trap, he rushed to their rescue. The Vampiric Council has had it in for the four since season one after the unfortunate sun-induced death of Baron Afanas.
But now, they charged the four with all the crimes that Guillermo had committed. As they were about to be executed, Guillermo arrived and saved the day. But at what cost?
Nandor already was suspicious of Guillermo. He had seen him kill Carol, a vampire from Simon the Devious’ (Nick Kroll) clan. In fact, before they were about to be killed, Nandor even told Vladislav, played by showrunner Jermaine Clement (who also played the same role in the original ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ film), that Guillermo was responsible for the deaths.
In Nandor’s defense, however, he also claimed that he had killed Guillermo, so as to save him for persecution. This brings us back to the original problem. How are the four going to react to this new side of Guillermo they were unaware of? ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ has been renewed for season 3, so we know that there is more to come. For starters, one can assume that Nandor will easily deal with this. He’s not the most concerned about things. And he has an obvious soft spot for Guillermo, as we saw in episode 8 of the second season when he promised to not only turn Guillermo into a vampire in the future but also decided to be a better, more considerate master. Colin Robinson has never concerned himself with anything. He’s unlikely to have any real effect on anyone’s decision on what to do with Guillermo as well. All we can expect from him is boring ramblings on the consequences of good and evil -- which he doesn’t believe in -- for the sole purpose of draining their energies.
Laszlo too is not a concern. He’s usually content with what everyone else is okay with as long as his physical needs are met. The real problem is Nadja. She doesn’t like Guillermo a lot. And that was especially visible in season 2 episode 9 when the two were at loggerheads with each other.
Nadja is also someone who can influence Laszlo easily. So there’s that to worry about as well. It’s not likely that any of the four will be grateful to Guillermo for saving them. That’s pretty obvious to anyone who has watched the show so far. But the question also remains: will Guillermo want to go back to them?
Also, in the unlikely event that things go back to normal, will the vampires ever feel safe in the presence of Guillermo, having witnessed his capabilities? Season 3 of ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ has a lot to answer and it can’t arrive soon enough!
