Pierre Cardin, an haute couture designer, died on December 29 and his death was confirmed by his family. They had said in a statement, "Italian by birth, Pierre Cardin never forgot his origins while bringing unconditional love to France." Cardin moved from Italy when he was young and to Paris, where he did a stint with Christian Dior, after which in 1950, he set up his own fashion label.

What is Pierre Cardin's net worth?

According to a report in the Sun, the designer has amassed a wealth of $800 million with his stint and cutting edge technology in the fashion industry. The designer's empire had a strong presence in Japan and in the Soviet Union in the 20th Century in the form of signed production deals. He was also one of the first designers to make a business connection with China in the fashion industry in 1979.

After Cardin's death, many in the industry shared condolence messages on social media. Fashion photographer and former model Nigel Barker wrote on Twitter, "We have lost a legend... Fashion Designer Pierre Cardin who revolutionized the industry with his futuristic designs and think outside of the box business approach has passed away today. He was one of the first people I worked for as a model at the beginning of my career RIP".

Some of the legendary fashion creations that Cardin made include the Cardin suits that were donned by The Beatles without lapels and buttons done up to the top. They had worn this suit for a photo shoot and this had marked their transformation from an R&B act to experimental pop stars. His work during this time period especially considered legendary in menswear. He had for a brief period received backlash from within the industry when he had begun reproducing fashions for ready-to-wear consumption for stores, especially, Paris department store Printemps. Cardin had famously once said, "Fashion is not enough." to fashion critic and columnist Eugenia Sheppard, and added, "I don’t want to be just a designer.”

Cardin, in a life spanning almost a century, was believed to be gay by many and his one controversial relationship happened to be with actor Jeanne Moreau. Moreau was titled the 'queen of the French New Wave cinema' and she was also muse. Cardin and Moreau also met after the release of her film 'Jules and Jim' and were reportedly in a relationship for five years.
