Jean-Pierre’s salary became a matter of contention after Rep Claudia Tenney (R-NY) unsuccessfully campaigned for an amendment to reduce the press secretary’s salary to $1.
Tenney called Jean-Pierre a “liar” and accused her of violating the Hatch Act, per Yahoo!.
On Thursday, November 9, Tenney said on the House floor, “During Ms. Jean-Pierre’s tenure as press secretary, she has repeatedly lied to the American people and acting in a condescending manner towards reporters and also violated the Hatch Act.”

Under the Hatch Act, the executive branch employees are prohibited from promoting and discouraging any political activity. However, Tenney claimed Jean-Pierre has spoken adversely of “MAGA Republicans.”
She further took to her social media account to summarize her point.
Tenney wrote, "White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre has said: Illegal Immigration is down 90% under the Biden Admin. Nobody is 'just walking in' across the Southern Border. The 2016 Election was stolen.”
She continued, "It is time her salary is reduced to $1 for her LIES to the American people."

Tenney also accused Jean-Pierre of “antisemitism” for her initial stance of declining to discuss the recent activities of people pulling down posters of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. She later denounced those actions.
The amendment, nevertheless, was defeated 257-165-1, While all the Democrats voted in favor of Jean-Pierre, 54 Republicans also joined them in opposing Tenney’s move.
Who is Karine Jean-Pierre?
Jean-Pierre took over the role of press secretary of the White House on May 13, 2022. She is the the first Black and openly LGBTQ person to hold the position of White House press secretary, per The Forbes.
